The rites of the Passion and the evocative Procession of the Mysteries on Good Friday
In the heart of the Nebrodi mountains, suspended between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the peaks behind it, Sant'Agata di Militello preserves one of the most heartfelt expressions of Sicilian popular religiosity: Holy Week. For eight days, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the town in the province of Messina gathers around the rites of the Passion, weaving together liturgy, art, and the choral participation of the entire citizenry.
The journey toward Easter begins with Palm Sunday, marked by the blessing of palm and olive branches in Piazza Duomo and the processional march toward the Mother Church. In the evening, the performance of the Passion guides the faithful into the atmosphere of reflection that characterizes the following days.
Among the most anticipated moments is the Living Stations of the Cross on Holy Monday, held in the courtyard of the Istituto Zito. Organized by the Santa Maria del Carmelo Parish with the involvement of young people, scouts, and children, the performance invites the community to retrace the final hours of Christ's life through a path that combines prayer, art, and popular devotion, officially beginning the Passion rites in the Sant'Agata area.
The heart of Holy Week is the Paschal Triduum. Holy Thursday, with the Mass of the Lord's Supper and communal adoration, prepares for the most intense day: Good Friday. Following the Liturgy of the Lord's Passion, the Procession of the Mysteries sets off, crossing the city streets starting from Piazza Duomo. It is the most solemn and evocative moment, where the statues of the Passion are paraded among the silent, gathered crowd in an atmosphere of intense emotion that is renewed every year.
The Easter Vigil, celebrated on Holy Saturday, leads to the joy of Easter Sunday, with Sunday masses closing the cycle of rites. The celebrations are also broadcast live by local stations, a sign of how deeply rooted this tradition is in the town's fabric.
The Holy Week of Sant'Agata di Militello represents a defining appointment for the entire Nebrodi area: an intangible heritage made of faith, memory, and community, which brings different generations out into the streets every spring, united by the same sentiment. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic side of Sicily, far from tourist circuits and deeply tied to its roots.
The 2026 program opened on Sunday, March 29, with Palm Sunday: blessing of the branches in Piazza Duomo, procession to the Mother Church, and, in the evening, the performance of the Passion at the Mother Church.
On Monday, March 30, the Living Stations of the Cross were held in the courtyard of the Istituto Zito, with the participation of young people, FSE scouts, and children from the community.
The Paschal Triduum saw the Chrism Mass at the Sanctuary of Tindari on Holy Thursday (April 2), followed by the Mass of the Lord's Supper and communal adoration. On Good Friday (April 3), after the Liturgy of the Passion, the solemn Procession of the Mysteries took place along the city streets, starting from Piazza Duomo. On Holy Saturday (April 4), the Easter Vigil preceded the Resurrection Sunday on April 5.
Sant'Agata di Militello is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Sant'Agata di Militello exit. By train, the Sant'Agata di Militello station is served by the Palermo-Messina Tyrrhenian line.
The rites take place during Holy Week, between late March and early April (dates vary according to the liturgical calendar). The highlight is the Procession of the Mysteries on Good Friday, in the evening, departing from Piazza Duomo.
Celebrations and processions are free and open to everyone.
Modest clothing that respects the religious nature of the events is recommended. For the evening procession, it is useful to arrive early in the Piazza Duomo area.
