Passion and Easter rites in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains
In Militello Rosmarino, a municipality in the province of Messina nestled at about 420 meters above sea level in the heart of the Nebrodi Park, Holy Week represents the most intense and heartfelt moment of the year. The rites of the Passion, passed down from generation to generation, transform the medieval village into a theater of popular faith where silence, ancient stone, and penitential chants merge into a unique atmosphere, far from the crowds of more popular events.
The most intense day is Good Friday. Celebrations begin in the dead of night, around 4:30 AM, when the entire community accompanies the urn of the dead Christ in religious silence, visiting the village churches. The bearers advance with a symbolic movement, two steps forward and one back, a sign of penance and forgiveness.
In the afternoon, the solemn procession of the Crucified Christ and the Our Lady of Sorrows, whose statue dates back to 1822, departs from the Mother Church. The heavy litter is carried on the shoulders of eight hooded men in blue tunics, the characteristic "Giudei", who observe a very strict fast until the procession. Four women dressed in black accompany the Virgin, while the Maddalene โ women of all social backgrounds โ hold the ropes of the cross.
In the evening, the procession winds through the streets with luminaries and the fourteen stations of the Via Crucis, accompanied by the traditional "Gesรน mio" chant sung at the Serro locality. The rite lasts for about three hours, involving the entire population in a choral experience of deep spirituality.
After the solemnity of the Passion, Easter Sunday explodes in joy. In the morning, the Risen Christ is carried in procession; in the evening, the village comes alive with lights, celebrations in the square, and traditional fireworks that illuminate the Nebrodi sky.
Visiting Militello Rosmarino during Holy Week means immersing yourself in an authentic and intimate Sicily. The village, of Norman-Swabian origin, preserves the ruins of an 11th-century castle and valuable churches such as the Church of the Annunziata and the Church of San Sebastiano. An ideal destination for those seeking an intimate Easter, far from the main tourist flows, surrounded by vineyards, ancient olive groves, and oak and beech forests.
In 2026, the Holy Week of Militello Rosmarino reached its peak on Good Friday, April 3, with the evocative pre-dawn procession of the Christ urn in the early hours of the morning, the afternoon procession of the Crucified Christ and the Virgin of Sorrows carried by the hooded "Giudei", and the evening Via Crucis along the fourteen stations. On Easter Sunday, April 5, the Nebrodi village celebrated the Resurrection with the procession of the Risen Christ and traditional fireworks. Militello Rosmarino was highlighted as one of the most evocative Easter destinations in the province of Messina for 2026.
Militello Rosmarino can be reached by car from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (take the Sant'Agata di Militello or Brolo exits) and then heading inland into the Nebrodi mountains. The nearest train station is in Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian line.
We recommend arriving early, especially on Good Friday and Easter morning. Wear comfortable shoes for the historic center and dress in a modest and respectful manner suitable for a religious context. Always check times and any updates on the parish and municipal channels.
Participation in the rites and processions is free and open to all.
