Rituals, processions, and the Easter N'Contru in the heart of the Iblei mountains
In Melilli, a small village in the Province of Syracuse perched on the Iblei heights, Holy Week represents the most intense and widely attended moment of the religious year. For an entire week, the town's historic center transforms into a stage for popular faith, where processions, vigils, and ancient rites mark the journey from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.
The celebrations unfold between the town's two spiritual pillars: the Mother Church of San Nicolò Vescovo and the Basilica Sanctuary of San Sebastiano, the heart of Melilli's devotion. The sacred statues, carried on the shoulders of the confraternity members and accompanied by a brass band, wind through the village streets amidst the emotional participation of the community.
Among the most solemn moments is the Good Friday procession, when the statues of the Dead Christ and the Our Lady of Sorrows are slowly carried through the streets of the historic center in an atmosphere of deep reflection. It is one of the most moving rituals of the Sicilian Holy Week, blending grief, popular piety, and ancient traditions passed down through generations.
The most anticipated and spectacular moment is undoubtedly the "N'Contru" (the meeting), which takes place on Easter Sunday in Piazza Rizzo. The two statues of the Risen Christ and the Madonna, carried on shoulders along different routes through the town, "meet" in the square packed with the faithful, in a crescendo of emotion accompanied by the festive sound of brass bands and the waving of white handkerchiefs. It is the symbol of the joy of the Resurrection, experienced with intensity by the entire community.
Easter Day concludes with the evocative "Spartenza" (the separation) on the parvis of the Basilica of San Sebastiano, when the two statues part ways to return to their respective churches, marking the end of the Easter celebrations. A poignant farewell that closes one of the most beloved traditions of Melilli and the entire south-eastern Sicily.
The Melilli Holy Week is not just a religious event but also an opportunity to promote the region: every year it attracts thousands of citizens and visitors to the historic center, intertwining spirituality, culture, and a sense of belonging. For those visiting the Province of Syracuse in the spring, it is an authentic experience of Sicilian folklore and popular devotion.
The 2026 edition of the Melilli Holy Week confirmed the great popular participation, drawing thousands of citizens and visitors to the historic center of the Iblean village. The calendar of celebrations unfolded from Palm Sunday to Easter Day, with rites managed by the Parish of San Nicolò Vescovo and the Basilica Sanctuary of San Sebastiano.
The solemn Good Friday procession with the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows through the streets of the historic center was particularly moving, while Easter Sunday featured the traditional N'Contru in Piazza Rizzo and the evocative Spartenza on the parvis of the Basilica of San Sebastiano.
Melilli is located on the Iblei heights, in the Province of Syracuse. The rituals take place in the historic center of Melilli, between the Mother Church of San Nicolò Vescovo, the Basilica Sanctuary of San Sebastiano, and Piazza Rizzo, the site of the N'Contru.
Admission to the rites and processions is free and open to all. For the Easter Sunday N'Contru, it is recommended to arrive early in Piazza Rizzo, as it fills up quickly with the faithful. Wear comfortable shoes for walking along the sloping streets of the village.
