Easter rites and the Lu ncontru di Pasqua in the Sicani village
Perched over 900 metres high in the Sicani Mountains, the village of Caltabellotta, in the province of Agrigento, experiences one of the most intense moments of spirituality and community participation in all of Sicily during Holy Week. For a week, the streets, squares, and numerous churches of the historic centre transform into a living stage, where the community relives the final days of Christ's life through a succession of ancient rites, processions, and sacred representations.
The celebrations begin on Palm Sunday with the blessing of the palms and a procession from the Church of the Carmine to the Mother Church, where a solemn Mass is held. On Maundy Thursday, the ceremony of the Washing of the Feet takes place in the Mother Church, followed by the traditional giro di li Sibbùlichi, an evening visit to the altars of repose set up in the town's churches (Pietà , Badia, Carmine, Cappuccini, Itria, and Sant'Agostino).
The most dramatic moment is Good Friday, featuring the evocative Living Stations of the Cross, which starts at the Church of Sant'Agostino and climbs up to Mount Calvario, re-enacting the stations of the Passion and the Crucifixion. In the afternoon, the procession of the Sorrowful Mother takes place, followed in the evening by the moving procession of the Dead Christ through the village streets.
The highlight of the Caltabellotta tradition is Lu ncontru di Pasqua on Easter Sunday morning. The statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, a highly venerated patron saint of the town, leaves the Cathedral where the Risen Christ is kept and travels to the church housing the Madonna—who is still unaware of the Resurrection—to announce that her Son has risen. The Archangel shuttles between the two churches until the Madonna emerges to meet the Risen Christ: it is the most emotional moment, greeted by the applause of the crowd and spectacular fireworks. The day concludes with a solemn Mass in the Cathedral and a final firework display.
Part of the Visit Valle dei Templi tourist circuit, the Holy Week of Caltabellotta combines faith, folklore, and local identity in one of the most picturesque settings in western Sicily, in a town frequently listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy.
In 2026, the Holy Week of Caltabellotta runs from March 29 to April 5. Palm Sunday (March 29) opens the rites with the blessing of the palms and a procession from the Church of the Carmine to the Mother Church. On Maundy Thursday, the Washing of the Feet in the Mother Church and the giro di li Sibbùlichi are scheduled. Good Friday is dedicated to the Living Stations of the Cross from Sant'Agostino to the Calvario, the procession of the Sorrowful Mother, and the evening procession of the Dead Christ. Easter Sunday (April 5) culminates with Lu ncontru di Pasqua.
Caltabellotta is located in the Sicani Mountains, in the province of Agrigento. By car, it can be reached from the SS115 with a detour inland; the nearest airports are Palermo (Punta Raisi) and Catania (Fontanarossa), both about 1.5 to 2 hours away.
The rites take place during Holy Week, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday.
All rites and processions are free and take place in the streets and churches of the historic centre.
We recommend comfortable clothing for walking the village's uphill streets and a jacket for the evenings, given the altitude.
