In the small town of Botrugno, in the Province of Lecce, Holy Week culminates in one of the most intense and characteristic rites of the entire Salento region: the Holy Saturday Procession. While most of Puglia holds its processions on Good Friday evening, Botrugno preserves a rarer tradition, taking place at the first light of dawn and maintaining an ancient, deeply popular charm.

A dawn rite from the Chapel of the Assumption

The procession begins at 6:00 AM from the Chapel of the Assumption, home to the historic Confraternity of the Assumption. From here, the procession winds slowly through the streets of the historic center, still wrapped in the morning twilight. It is a moment of reflection and mourning: the community commemorates the death of Christ before the joy of Easter, in a suspended atmosphere that blends faith, silence, and devotion.

The "women-led" procession

What makes Botrugno unique in the Salento landscape is its women-led procession. The statues are carried on the shoulders of young local women, dressed in elegant, severe black attire as a sign of mourning. This female prominence, unusual in Passion processions, distinguishes Botrugno from the rites of nearby Galatina, Maglie, and Cerfignano, making it a singular stop on the Easter itinerary of lower Salento.

The statues and funeral marches

At the heart of the procession are the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows, the two effigies that tell the drama of the Passion. The slow pace of the procession is marked by the band's funeral marches and the confraternity's prayers, which are rooted in ancient penitential practices. Once, the confreres observed "discipline" rites on the Saturdays of Lent, reciting invocations for forgiveness that still echo in the spirit of the rite today.

When it takes place

The procession is held every year on Holy Saturday, a movable date linked to Easter. The 2026 edition took place on April 4th, and the 2025 edition on April 19th. The rite has remained unchanged in its form for generations and is free to attend.
