Holy Week rites in the village of the Alcantara Valley
Perched on the slopes overlooking the famous Alcantara Gorges, Motta Camastra is a small village in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily, which transforms into a place of intense devotion during Holy Week. The Holy Easter Celebrations involve the entire community in a journey of liturgical services, processions, and traditional rites passed down from generation to generation, attracting believers, locals, families, and tourists passionate about religious traditions.
The heart of the celebrations lies in the most solemn moments of the Easter Triduum. The Good Friday procession winds through the narrow streets of the historic center, accompanied by the choral participation of the locals. The liturgy unfolds through prayer, reflection, and devotional chants, leading up to the explosive joy of Easter Sunday.
What makes Easter in Motta Camastra unique are several customs deeply rooted in local culture:
The celebrations are accompanied by traditional sweets: the star is the cuddura cu' l'ova, a typical Easter pastry born from the fusion of tradition and ancient beliefs, enjoyed in homes and during the village's social gatherings.
Experiencing Holy Easter in Motta Camastra means immersing yourself in an authentic Sicily, far from mass tourism circuits, where popular devotion blends with the charm of a landscape shaped by the Alcantara River. It is an opportunity to discover an intangible heritage made of songs, gestures, and symbols that endure through time.
Holy Week 2026 in Motta Camastra experienced its most intense moments between Holy Thursday and Good Friday, with the traditional rites of u lamientu and u lavurieddu, leading up to the Good Friday procession along the streets of the historic center.
On Easter day, Sunday April 5, 2026, the community gathered for l'Asguondru, the meeting between the Risen Christ and the Madonna, a culminating moment of joy. The celebrations, free and open to all, were organized by the Municipality of Motta Camastra and accompanied by traditional sweets such as the cuddura cu' l'ova.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Motta Camastra (ME), with the Town Hall in Piazza Croce 1, 98030 Motta Camastra as a reference point.
