Italy's oldest and largest Christmas market, in the heart of Piazza Walther
The Bolzano Christmas Market, known in German as the Bozner Christkindlmarkt, is the oldest and largest Christmas market in Italy. The first edition dates back to 1991: since then, every year, the historic center of the South Tyrolean capital dresses up for the holidays and welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over Italy and abroad. Located in the municipality of Bolzano, in the province of Bolzano and the Trentino-Alto Adige region, it has become a true symbol of the Italian Advent.
The hub of the event is the scenic Piazza Walther, at the foot of the Cathedral, where the large illuminated fir tree is lit. The typical wooden stalls also extend towards the Christmas Park, along Via dell'Isarco, and in the squares of the center. Strolling among the stalls, you can breathe in the true South Tyrolean Christmas spirit, amidst garlands, scented candles, and artisanal decorations.
The market brings together over a hundred selected exhibitors offering the best of local craftsmanship:
The Advent program is packed with events: traditional music concerts, choirs, brass bands, and accordions enliven the weekends in Piazza Walther. For the little ones, there is no shortage of an ice skating rink, a carousel, and a small train, as well as creative workshops and the parade of Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus. Living nativity scenes and performances animate various picturesque corners of the city.
Visiting the Bolzano market means immersing yourself in the dual Italian and Tyrolean soul of South Tyrol, in a unique setting between snow-capped mountains and a medieval historic center. Admission is free and the event remains open until Epiphany, closing only on Christmas Day.
The dates for the 2026 edition are confirmed: the Bozner Christkindlmarkt will be open from November 27, 2026, to January 6, 2027, with the inauguration and the lighting of the fir tree on November 26 at 5:00 PM. Piazza Walther, the Christmas Park, and the streets of the center will welcome the Tyrolean craft stalls, nativity scenes, decorations, and gastronomic specialties. The complete calendar of events, concerts, and activities for children will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the opening.
By train: Bolzano Centrale station, just a few minutes' walk from Piazza Walther.
By car: A22 Brenner motorway, take the Bolzano Sud or Bolzano Nord exits. The center is closed to traffic: we recommend using the parking structures (Parcheggio Centro, Fiera) and public transport.
Admission is free. Typical hours: Monday-Thursday 11:00-19:00; Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays 10:00-19:00. Closed on December 25th; reduced hours on December 24th and 31st.
Crowds are high on weekends: prefer weekdays for a quieter visit. Warm clothing is recommended.
