Japanese-style cherry blossom viewing in the Lattari Mountains, with views of Mount Vesuvius
For two Sundays in April, the Tralia district of Pimonte—a small town in the Metropolitan City of Naples overlooking the Lattari Mountains—transforms into a slice of Japanese heaven. The Hanami of Pimonte embraces the ancient Japanese custom of hanami, which literally means «flower viewing», and transplants it into the cherry orchards of Via Riatiello, at the foot of Mount Faito. Blankets and cushions are spread out beneath the white and pink blossoms, while the gaze wanders freely toward Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples. This dual wonder—petals in the foreground and the volcano in the background—has made the event one of the most photographed spring highlights in Campania.
The initiative was born in 2023 following relationships built with Japan by the GAL Terra Protetta during Foodex Japan, the major agri-food fair in Tokyo where Lattari Mountain companies showcased their products. From that ideal twinning, the first edition was hosted in Riatiello, and the event has grown year by year: 2025 marked the third edition, spread over three days, and 2026 the fourth, held over two Sundays. The event is organized by the Municipality of Pimonte in collaboration with Pro Loco Pimonte and Pimonte Oasi Verde, the brand through which the town promotes its hiking and rural heritage, with the support of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
The program is designed to fill the entire day at a leisurely pace, in the slow and contemplative spirit of hanami. Among the cherry trees, the following activities take place:
The gastronomic journey is one of the reasons families return to Riatiello every year. The menus are born from the encounter between Japanese tradition and local Pimonte products, with options for specific dietary needs: vegetarian, gluten-free, lactose-free, and a dedicated children's menu. The day concludes with a sake tasting. Please note that bringing outside food and drinks is not permitted to ensure proper waste management in this delicate agricultural setting.
Behind the floral scenery lies a real agricultural economy: the Pimonte cherry is one of the traditional agri-food products (PAT) recognized by the Campania Region for this area. The cherry orchards that offer such a spectacular bloom in early April are the same ones that provide fruit for local markets in May and June. The Hanami serves this purpose too: telling visitors about a small-scale supply chain made of tiny terraced plots among the chestnut groves of the Lattari Mountains, and linking experiential tourism to the daily life of the town.
The Hanami of Pimonte is designed for all ages. Children will find hands-on workshops, fairy tales, a dedicated cosplay contest, and large meadows where they can move around safely. Adults can simply relax under a cherry tree with a book—which is exactly what the Japanese have been doing for centuries. The free-entry formula, with online booking to manage visitor flow, has made the event accessible and very popular; it is advisable to arrive early and account for a few minutes of waiting for the shuttles.
The window is short and weather-dependent: the cherry blossom season in the Lattari Mountains is concentrated between the first and third week of April, which is why dates are announced on short notice. Those arriving in Pimonte can easily extend their visit: the town is the starting point for trails toward Mount Faito and Mount Pendolo, and is located just a few kilometers from the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula. Comfortable shoes, a blanket, and a camera are the right equipment.
For its fourth edition, the Hanami of Pimonte chose a two-Sunday format, April 12 and 19, 2026, open continuously from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM in the cherry orchards of Via Riatiello, Tralia district. The edition was promoted by the municipal administration of Pimonte with Pro Loco Pimonte and Pimonte Oasi Verde, with funding from the Metropolitan City of Naples, and was built around the promotion of the Pimonte cherry, one of the traditional agri-food products of the territory.
The cherry orchard was equipped with picnic areas, cushions, and relaxation spaces, while the path featured a Japanese craft market, creative workshops, kendo demonstrations, and performances. The tea ceremony highlighted the day on April 12, while the cosplay contest for children took place on April 19. To complete the experience, the food area offered Italian-Japanese inspired menus and sake tastings at the end of the day.
Admission remained free, with tickets booked online via Eventbrite to manage crowds; the shuttle service from Piazza Roma and the designated parking areas allowed visitors to reach the orchards without congesting the district's roads.
Sunday, April 12 and Sunday, April 19, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM — Via Riatiello cherry orchards, Tralia district (Pimonte).
Bringing outside food and drinks is not permitted: catering is provided by the event's food area.
Pimonte can be reached by car via the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, taking the Castellammare di Stabia exit and continuing along the SS366 toward Agerola. The event area is located in Via Riatiello, in the Tralia district. By train, the reference station is Castellammare di Stabia (Circumvesuviana), which is connected to Pimonte by local bus lines.
During the event, several parking areas are active (Cemetery square, Valle delle Noci, stalls along the state road, and parking at the Fratelli Cervi Elementary School) with a round-trip shuttle service from Piazza Roma to the cherry orchards. The parking lot of the Agriturismo La Pimontese is within walking distance.
Admission to the Hanami of Pimonte is free: in 2026, the ticket (€0.00) had to be booked online via Eventbrite by selecting the day. Food and drinks are not included in the ticket, and bringing outside food or beverages is not permitted.
The terrain is that of a hilly cherry orchard: closed, comfortable shoes are recommended. Bring a picnic blanket, arrive in the morning to find a spot in the shade of the most beautiful trees, and check the Pimonte Oasi Verde social media channels in the days leading up to the event, as the status of the bloom and any changes due to bad weather are communicated there.
