Guidonia Christmas Village

A month of festivities in the heart of the Tiburtina area

The Guidonia Christmas Village, promoted by the Municipality of Guidonia Montecelio with the support of the Lazio Region, has become the most anticipated Christmas event in this part of the Aniene Valley. From the first week of December until January 6th, a large area of the city is transformed with wooden chalets, themed light installations, a massive LED-lit Christmas tree over three meters tall, and attractions designed for children. The event was created with the stated goal of « enlivening the city's neighborhoods during the Christmas season and celebrating the local cultural and folk traditions ».

A village that changes neighborhoods

The unique feature of this event is its itinerant nature: each edition is hosted in a different area of the municipality, distributing the cultural offerings across a vast, polycentric territory. Following the first editions in Villalba and Colle Fiorito, the village moved to Piazza Giacomo Matteotti in the center of Guidonia, and more recently to Parco La Maddalena, between Marco Simone and Setteville Nord. This approach allows every neighborhood to experience its own « local » Christmas without needing to travel to Rome or Tivoli.

What to find in the village

• Christmas market in wooden chalets, offering handicrafts, gift ideas, and food and wine specialties;
• Santa's House and themed nativity scene chalets featuring live actors;
• Ice skating rink, with free sessions reserved for local schools;
• Baroque-style carousel and inflatable games for children;
• Artificial snow, face painting, mascots, and tastings of Christmas treats;
• Live entertainment: music, magic shows, street performers, stilt walkers, and fire shows;
• Street food area with sweet and savory traditional Lazio specialties.

A public project

The event is funded through public resources: for the 2025-2026 edition, the total budget was 70,000 euros, with 30,000 provided by the Lazio Region and 40,000 allocated by the municipal administration. Setup and operational management were entrusted to a private event operator, while in the past, the Pro Loco of Guidonia managed the daily entertainment schedule. The formula remains consistent year after year: free entry to the village, with fees applicable only for certain attractions like the ice rink and carousel.

Why it's worth visiting

Guidonia Montecelio is the second most populous municipality in the Lazio region after Rome and one of Italy's youngest, founded in 1937. While it lacks a monumental historic center like nearby Tivoli, it has built a strong festive identity over the years through highly popular neighborhood events. The Christmas Village is its most successful example, attracting thousands of visitors between December and Epiphany. It also serves as a great starting point for a winter weekend in the Province of Rome: just a few kilometers away are the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Villa d'Este and Villa Adriana in Tivoli, as well as the medieval village of Montecelio, the upper district of the municipality, with its fortress and panoramic views of the Roman countryside.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere is simple and familiar, reminiscent of traditional village Christmases: children queuing for Santa's House, families strolling among the chalets at dusk, and musical groups and artists taking turns on stage during festive afternoons. The most anticipated moment remains the Befana on January 6th, which concludes the village with a final show and the distribution of stockings to the children.
