The mountain race through the alpine pastures of the Casies Valley
The Gsieser Almenlauf & Volksmarsch is one of the most beloved sporting events in the Municipality of Valle di Casies/Gsies, located in the autonomous province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. Every summer, the race attracts mountain runners, enthusiasts, and amateur athletes from across South Tyrol and beyond, who challenge themselves on one of the most scenic trails in the Puster Valley Alps.
The mass start is set at Schlosserhof, at the end of the valley (Talschluss) in the village of San Maddalena/St. Magdalena. From there, the approximately 12 km route with 1,070 meters of elevation gain climbs through a succession of high-altitude alpine pastures. The classic trail passes the Ackerle and Tscharniet Alm, crosses the Kalksteiner Jöchl, and continues past the Kasermäder Alm, Gipfel Alm, Kaser Alm, and Pfoi Alm, before finishing at the Uwald Alm, along the Almweg 2000. It is a demanding but spectacular climb, immersed in the Dolomite scenery of the valley.
The event is divided into two formats. The timed race is designed for athletes and trained sportspeople who tackle the full elevation gain against the clock. The Volksmarsch (popular march) is a non-competitive variant without timing: everyone can choose their own start time and pace, finishing at the mountain hut. It is the ideal format for those who want to enjoy the mountains and the festivities without the pressure of a leaderboard. As the organizers remind us, "everyone is welcome, whether you are a professional or a hobbyist."
The Gsieser Almenlauf is organized by the Sport- und Freizeitverein Yusuf and has become a staple of the summer in the Casies Valley over the years. The registration fee includes a hot meal with a drink, bag transport, aid stations along the route, a participant gift, and free parking. The day concludes with the awards ceremony at the finish hut, honoring the top men and women, followed by a grand raffle with prizes and vouchers for all entrants, and an After Race Party in a unique setting. It is a perfect way to combine the physical challenge of the climb with the convivial spirit of South Tyrolean alpine huts.
The 2026 edition of the Gsieser Almenlauf & Volksmarsch, the eleventh, is scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2026, in Valle di Casies/Gsies. The mass start is set for 09:00 at Schlosserhof, at the valley floor of San Maddalena/St. Magdalena; bib collection and payment of fees start from 07:30 in the start area.
The track of approximately 12 km and 1,070 meters of elevation gain crosses high-altitude pastures, crosses the Kalksteiner Jöchl, and ends at the Uwald Alm. Alongside the timed race, the Volksmarsch, the non-timed popular march with a flexible start time, is confirmed. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 14:00 in the finish area, with honors for the best men and women and a grand raffle with prizes for all participants, followed by the After Race Party.
The Valle di Casies/Gsies can be reached by car from the Puster Valley by taking the Monguelfo-Tesido exit and driving up the valley to San Maddalena/St. Magdalena. The nearest train station is Monguelfo (Puster Valley line), which is connected to the valley by local buses. The meeting point is at the Schlosserhof, at the end of the valley.

This is a mountain route with significant elevation gain: trail shoes and layered clothing are recommended, as weather conditions at high altitudes can change rapidly.
