About District Tournament

Every summer, Grottaferrata splits into nine districts and gathers at the "Gianluca Paolucci" Municipal Sports Field for the District Tournament, the historic football event of the Castelli Romani area. Badia, Borghetto, Capanne, Casali, Colonnetta, Quattrostrade, Valle Violata, Fontanaccio, and Piazza face off on June evenings with kick-off at 8:30 PM, amidst packed stands, colorful flags, and pasta dishes offered by local restaurateurs. It is more than just a tournament: it is a month-long town festival.

The District Tournament, the summer of Grottaferrata

Some events capture the spirit of a community better than any travel guide: the Grottaferrata District Tournament is one of them. For about a month, between June and early July, the Municipality of Grottaferrata, in the heart of the Castelli Romani near Rome (Lazio), is ideally divided into nine districts that compete in football before the entire town. It is not a professional league, nor does it claim to be: it is a local tradition where football is primarily an excuse to come together.

Nine districts on the pitch

The stars of the show are the nine historic districts that make up the urban fabric of Grottaferrata: Badia, Borghetto, Capanne, Casali, Colonnetta, Quattrostrade, Valle Violata, Fontanaccio, and Piazza. Each team is composed of local residents and brings its own colors, banners, and a following of fans that includes entire families, from grandparents to children. The rivalry is spirited but always good-natured: at the end of the evening, everyone gathers together under the stands.

How the format works

  • Initial group stage, with teams divided by draw into three pools
  • The top four teams advance to the semi-finals
  • Grand final, the most anticipated event of the entire competition
  • Over twenty matches in total, all with evening kick-offs

The playing field is always the same: the "Gianluca Paolucci" Municipal Sports Field, managed by the ASD Accademia Calciatori, which for the occasion becomes the nerve center of evening town life.

A self-managed event

In recent years, the tournament has taken on a unique character: an organizing committee composed of district representatives, coordinated by Pierfranco Trovalusci, Luca De Luca, and Riccardo De Benedictis, directly manages logistics, security, and catering, with the patronage of the Municipal Administration. Neighborhood volunteers handle everything, from monitoring the stands to welcoming the public, in what the organizers themselves have defined as a true laboratory of civic self-management. It is a rare and successful model of grassroots participation that has allowed the event to continue even during administratively challenging years.

Much more than football

Anyone arriving at the Paolucci field for the first time immediately understands that the result is only part of the evening. After the final whistle, local restaurateurs offer pasta dishes to the spectators, families stay to chat late into the night, and the children continue to play on the sidelines. The tournament is also a moment of shared memory: each edition honors deceased local residents with dedications and moments of silence before the matches.

Grottaferrata, between the Abbey and the Castelli Romani

The town is famous for the Greek Abbey of San Nilo, an exarchic monastery founded in 1004 and still officiated according to the Byzantine rite today, and for its Castelli wines. An evening at the District Tournament is easily combined with a stroll through the historic center, a visit to the abbey, and dinner in one of the local fraschette (traditional taverns). For those traveling in Lazio in the summer, it is an opportunity to see an event that is not built for tourists but welcomes everyone with natural ease.

Why it is worth going

Because it is free, authentic, and reflects a community that organizes itself. In a region rich in food festivals and historical re-enactments, the Grottaferrata District Tournament occupies a space of its own: that of a modern popular festival, born from sport and grown into a collective ritual of the local summer.

District Tournament โ€” edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Grottaferrata District Tournament was held from June 7 to July 3 at the "Gianluca Paolucci" Municipal Sports Field, with the nine town districts on the pitch every evening at 8:30 PM. An event entirely self-managed by district representatives, with the patronage of the Municipality, which concluded with a grand final before packed stands: the title went to Valle Violata, victorious 2-1 over Colonnetta.

District Tournament 2026: the year of self-management

The 2026 edition was marked by an important organizational change. With the Municipal Administration in a transition phase, the Municipality of Grottaferrata guaranteed patronage and support, while operational management passed entirely to the district committee, coordinated by Pierfranco Trovalusci, Luca De Luca, and Riccardo De Benedictis, supported by the ASD Accademia Calciatori for facility management.

Neighborhood volunteers handled logistics, hospitality, catering, and stand security, creating what the organizers defined as a laboratory of civic self-management. The tournament honored deceased local youths, with a special dedication to Stefano Patrizi, who passed away prematurely in January 2026.

The nine districts Badia, Borghetto, Capanne, Casali, Colonnetta, Quattrostrade, Valle Violata, Fontanaccio, and Piazza took to the field, with a group stage format followed by semi-finals and a final. As per tradition, after each match, local restaurateurs offered pasta dishes to the public.
