About Bread Run

Every September, Genzano di Roma transforms its historic center into a race track. The Genzano Bread Run is a 10km road race that blends sport, tradition, and local gastronomy. With its cobblestone streets, constant elevation changes, and stunning views over Lake Nemi, the route feels like an urban trail, while the race pack and post-race refreshments celebrate the famous PGI Pane Casareccio di Genzano. A staple of the Lazio running calendar.

A race that tastes like bread

In the heart of the Castelli Romani, just over thirty kilometers from Rome, Genzano di Roma is famous across Italy for two things: the Infiorata flower festival and its PGI Pane Casareccio di Genzano. The Genzano Bread Run was born from the fusion of these local identities and a passion for running. This 10km road race brings hundreds of athletes to the town every September to dash through alleys, squares, and scenic avenues in the province of Rome, Lazio.

Organizers and origins

The event is organized by ASD Genzano Marathon, a sports club founded in 2007 with deep roots in the local community. Over the years, the group has developed an event that continues to grow, becoming one of the most anticipated races in the Castelli running circuit. The race is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Genzano di Roma and in collaboration with the OPES Provincial Committee of Latina.

The route: almost an urban trail

The course is anything but simple. Start and finish lines are located in Piazza Tommaso Frasconi, in the town center. From there, the route winds through some of Genzano's most iconic landmarks:

  • Palazzo Sforza Cesarini, with its historic park overlooking the lake
  • The famous via dell'Infiorata, the steep street that hosts flower petal carpets in June
  • Tree-lined avenues with views toward Lake Nemi and, on clear days, the coastline

Cobblestones, constant elevation changes, and short, sharp climbs make the race challenging. Many runners describe it as a quasi-urban trail, where you need to manage your pace intelligently rather than just chasing speed. The maximum time limit is one hour and forty-five minutes.

More than just competition

Alongside the competitive race, there is a non-competitive event and a leisurely 8km fun walk open to families and walkers, with proceeds donated to charity. This reflects the spirit of the event: the Bread Run is not just about rankings, but a town celebration on the move.

Bread at the heart of it all

The event's true trademark is the race pack, filled with local products, and especially the post-race refreshments, where PGI Pane Casareccio di Genzano is served alongside genuine local flavors. Naturally leavened bread, thick crust, and airy crumb: a product protected by PGI status since 1997, the first Italian bread to receive this recognition.

A key date in the town calendar

The race traditionally falls during the PGI Pane Casareccio Festival and the celebrations for Saint Thomas of Villanova, the town's patron saint. Visitors arriving for the race find the town in full festive mode, with food stalls, markets, and evening events. It is also a qualifying event for the Castelli Romani and Corsa Libera running circuits, ensuring a strong turnout from clubs across Lazio every year.

Why participate

If you are looking for a personal best on a 10km course, you might find faster tracks elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a race with a soulโ€”scenery, history, gastronomy, and a crowd cheering from their balconiesโ€”you will not be disappointed. The Genzano Bread Run is one of the best ways to discover the Castelli Romani while running.

Bread Run โ€” edition 2026

The 13th edition of the Genzano Bread Run is scheduled for Sunday, September 20, 2026, in Genzano di Roma. A 10km race starting and finishing in Piazza Tommaso Frasconi, featuring cobblestones, elevation changes, and views of Lake Nemi. This edition is dedicated to the memory of Rinieri Ferone and Francesco Pappalardo and is valid for the 2026 Castelli Romani and Corsa Libera circuits.

Genzano Bread Run 2026 โ€” 13th edition

Registration for the thirteenth edition opens in June 2026. The race, organized by ASD Genzano Marathon under the patronage of the Municipality of Genzano di Roma and in collaboration with the OPES Provincial Committee of Latina, maintains the formula that has ensured its success: competition, promotion of the historic center, and local gastronomic excellence, starting with the PGI Pane Casareccio di Genzano.

The 10km route crosses the town center, passing Palazzo Sforza Cesarini and the via dell'Infiorata, with cobblestone sections and constant elevation changes that earn it the definition of a "quasi-urban trail." Alongside the competitive event, the non-competitive race and the 8km charity fun walk are confirmed.
