About Great Historical Carnival of San Piero Patti

Nestled in the Nebrodi mountains in the heart of the province of Messina, the Great Historical Carnival of San Piero Patti is one of Sicily's most cherished and ancient masquerade traditions. Recognized as an Italian Historical Carnival 2025 by the Ministry of Culture, it blends parades of papier-mâché floats and masked groups with a unique tradition: U Mascaràru, a figure cloaked in dark robes carrying a pot filled with pasta. The festivities culminate in the famous Carnevalone, a rare ritual held on the Saturday after Ash Wednesday.

The Great Historical Carnival of San Piero Patti

In the village of San Piero Patti, perched on the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, Carnival is much more than just a masquerade: it is a collective memory that brings color to the historic center's streets every year. The Great Historical Carnival, reaching its thirty-ninth edition in 2026, was officially proclaimed an Italian Historical Carnival 2025 by the Ministry of Culture, a recognition that certifies the cultural and heritage value of this local event.

U Mascaràru, the soul of the festival

The symbolic heart of the Carnival is U Mascaràru, a folkloric character wrapped in a dark cloak, hood pulled low, carrying a staff and the inevitable chamber pot filled with pasta. A mysterious and archaic figure, historically tasked with leading the masked revelers to dance parties, he embodies the oldest soul of the local carnival rite. His presence links the present to the village's medieval roots, marked by Norman rule and the settlement of Piedmontese and Lombard communities.

Allegorical floats and competing groups

The most anticipated moment is the grand parade of allegorical floats, papier-mâché masterpieces created by local artisans. A dozen floats and masked groups compete along the streets of the center, with themes inspired by pop culture, cinema, music, and cartoons. The creations are judged and awarded, sparking a friendly competition among groups that spend months working on their designs.

The Carnevalone, a rare ritual

The great peculiarity of San Piero Patti is the Carnevalone, which takes place on the Saturday following Ash Wednesday, similar to the Ambrosian rite. On this day, the historic center welcomes floats and groups from neighboring Nebrodi towns in an exhibition parade that extends the festivities beyond the canonical days. The event concludes in Piazza Duomo with live music, awards, and the traditional pasta party featuring macaroni with meat sauce.

A festival for the whole community

The program does not forget the young or the elderly: the School Carnival, the Senior Citizens' Carnival at the Società Operaia, and the Children's Carnival in Piazza Duomo, complete with traditional sweets and hot chocolate, make the Great Carnival an intergenerational event, organized by the Municipality of San Piero Patti with the support of A.S.D. Petra. It is a celebration that demonstrates how the strength of a small Sicilian community can transform into living culture.
