Granfondo Valle del Nisi

An MTB granfondo between the sea and the Peloritani Mountains

The Granfondo Valle del Nisi is one of the most beloved mountain bike races on the Ionian coast of Sicily. It takes place in the municipality of Alì Terme, in the Province of Messina, with the start and finish line located on the picturesque seafront overlooking the Ionian Sea, between Messina and Taormina. Established in 2021, the event is organized by ASD Bike Marino Messina with the patronage of the municipalities of Alì Terme, Alì, Fiumedinisi, and Nizza di Sicilia. It is part of the Coppa Sicilia circuit of the Italian Cycling Federation and the Mediterranea MTB Challenge.

Two routes in the Nisi Valley

The track winds along the roads and trails of the Nisi Valley, on the slopes of Monte Scuderi, in the heart of the Peloritani Mountains. Bikers face challenging climbs, technical single tracks, and fast descents, passing through the chestnut woods of Nizza di Sicilia and the historic centers of Alì and Fiumedinisi, where they encounter charming churches and panoramic views of the Ionian coast. Two routes are planned:

• Granfondo: approximately 42 km with 1,650 meters of elevation gain, for the most experienced riders;
• Excursion / E-Bike: approximately 20 km with 900 meters of elevation gain, also open to pedal-assisted bicycles.

A celebration for the whole town

The Granfondo Valle del Nisi is more than just a race: it is a weekend of sport, entertainment, and hospitality. Past editions have welcomed over 300 athletes from across Sicily and the rest of Italy, supported by refreshment points along the route, medical assistance, and ambulances. The day before the race is dedicated to activities for children and local product stands, which bring the Alì Terme seafront to life and involve the entire community. It is the perfect opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of Sicily, where the sea meets the Peloritani mountains.
