The grand journey of sustainable mobility concludes in Sicily's smallest village
The Appennino Bike Tour Festival is the national traveling event celebrating the Appennino Bike Tour, the cycle route along the Apennine ridge that connects the North and South of the country over 3,100 kilometers of secondary, low-traffic roads. Promoted by Vivi Appennino in collaboration with the Italian Cycling Federation, ANCI, and Confcommercio, the Festival crosses fourteen Apennine regions to promote cycle tourism, sustainable mobility, and the development of small villages.
The 2026 edition starts from Genoa on June 19 and concludes on September 20, 2026, in Roccafiorita, in the province of Messina. With its very few inhabitants and just over a square kilometer of surface area, Roccafiorita is the smallest municipality in Sicily and among the smallest in Southern Italy: a village perched on the Peloritani Mountains, overlooking the Agrò Valley, chosen as the symbolic arrival point of the long Apennine journey.
The final stage offers a program designed for citizens, administrators, associations, and enthusiasts:
At every stop, the Appennino Bike Tour Village hosts talks, conferences, introductory cycling activities for children, and the recognition of the Ambassadors of the Apennines. All events and bike rides are free and open to the public; online registration on the official website is recommended. For Roccafiorita and the whole of Sicily, hosting the tour's arrival represents an opportunity for tourism promotion and identity enhancement of the Peloritani territory.
The final stage on September 20, 2026, brings the Appennino Bike Tour Festival to the smallest village in Sicily, Roccafiorita, in the Peloritani Mountains in the province of Messina. The program includes a free institutional bike ride led by the Italian Cycling Federation, a Regional Forum dedicated to the sustainable development of inland areas, the ascent to the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Aiuto, and free tastings of local specialties such as maccaruni cu sucu. Participation is open and free, with registration recommended on the official website.
Roccafiorita can be reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, taking the Roccalumera or Taormina exit, then driving up the Agrò Valley along the roads of the Peloritani mountains. The nearest train station is Santa Teresa di Riva, on the Messina-Catania line, followed by a road connection to the village.
Participation in the stage, the bike ride, and the tastings is free. Online registration on the official Festival website is recommended.
Sportswear and a bicycle are recommended for the ride, as well as comfortable shoes for the climb to the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Aiuto. Accommodation facilities are mainly located along the Ionian coast of Messina (Santa Teresa di Riva, Taormina).
