The Carnival of the village of Gragnola

The Gragnola Carnival is one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of Lunigiana, located in the territory of the Municipality of Fivizzano (Province of Massa-Carrara, Tuscany). Gragnola is a hamlet situated along the valley floor of the Aulella river, dominated by the ruins of the evocative Castello dell'Aquila, an ancient Malaspina stronghold: it is in this setting, made of stone and history, that the village dresses up every year to welcome Carnival.

A popular festival for families and children

This is an event with an authentic flavor, far from large tourist parades and closer to the genuine dimension of a village festival. The nerve center is Piazza Gioco, which fills up in the afternoon with masks, confetti, and streamers. The program revolves around some classic elements of the Lunigiana Carnival:

• Parade of allegorical floats that pass through the village, involving both young and old;
• Pentolaccia, the traditional game that playfully closes the Carnival season;
• Lenten Fair, the ancient market that has always accompanied this time of year with stalls selling sweets, toys, and local products;
• Food & drinks stands and inflatables dedicated to the little ones.

Carnival in the Lunigiana tradition

Gragnola is part of a network of small carnivals that, between February and March, enliven the villages of Lunigiana: from Pontremoli to Bagnone, from Filattiera to Codiponte, every village has its own day and its own traditions. This widespread distribution is a distinctive feature of the territory, where the festival is not concentrated in a single location but spreads from village to village, keeping alive a heritage of sociality and popular traditions.

The Gragnola Carnival fits into this fabric as a community-sized festival, where the floats are often the result of voluntary work by residents and local associations. The event is held outdoors and, in case of bad weather, it is cancelled or moved to the sports hall, depending on the edition.
