The evening Holy Week ritual in the Amalfi Coast village
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Conca dei Marini, in the province of Salerno, the Good Friday Procession is not an event staged for visitors: it is the moment when the entire village stops. In the late afternoon, daily activities are suspended, families gather in front of the church, and as darkness falls over the Amalfi Coast, the procession begins its journey along the narrow streets of the village. On Good Friday evening, traffic is halted and cars are cleared from the affected streets to make way for the processionโan administrative detail that speaks volumes about how much this ritual means to the community.
The itinerary touches the village's iconic landmarks and remains virtually unchanged from year to year. The streets involved in the procession are:
In the 2025 edition, the procession was scheduled between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM, with a parking ban from 6:00 PM: those arriving from outside the area should plan to leave their cars far from the route and reach the village on foot.
The procession is the culmination of an intense week. In Conca dei Marini, Holy Week celebrations are traditionally opened by the Miserere, the Passion chant that has an ancient history on the Amalfi Coast. The Church of San Pancrazio Martire, the town's patron saint, has also hosted Miserere โ cantare la passione in the past, a sacred drama of music and theater by Carlo Faiello born from Campanian devotional folk music, also performed during the same period in Furore and Amalfi. It is a sign of a tradition shared by all the coastal villages: in the week leading up to Easter, the Coast fills with nocturnal processions, torches, drums, and polyphonic chants.
With just over seven hundred inhabitants, Conca dei Marini is one of the smallest municipalities in Campania and one of the most characteristic on the Amalfi Coast. The village clings between the sea and the mountains, amidst white houses, stairways, and lemon groves, and guards two famous sites: the Emerald Grotto and the Monastery of Santa Rosa, where the sfogliatella pastry is said to have been born. Experiencing Good Friday here means seeing the Coast in its most authentic version, far from the summer crowds.
The last documented edition took place on Friday, April 18, 2025. As of the writing of this guide, no program or official confirmation for 2026 has been published by the Parish of San Pancrazio Martire or the Municipality of Conca dei Marini: as it is a ritual tied to the liturgical calendar, the date will fall on Good Friday, but we recommend checking times and the route with the Municipality or the parish before setting off.
For 2026, no official communication regarding the Good Friday Procession of Conca dei Marini has been published yet. This information is based on the last documented edition, held on April 18, 2025, and on the continuity of a ritual that belongs to the Holy Week of the Amalfi Coast.
Those wishing to attend can refer to the usual schedule: evening procession through Via I Maggio, Largo Lama dell'Olmo, Via Umberto I, Piazza Olmo, Via Roma, and Largo Monastero Santa Rosa, with parking and transit bans during the affected hours. We recommend verifying times and the itinerary by contacting the Municipality of Conca dei Marini or the Parish of San Pancrazio Martire directly before planning your visit.
By car: SS163 Amalfi Drive, between Amalfi and Praiano; parking in the village is extremely limited and on the evening of the procession several streets are closed to traffic, so it is best to arrive well in advance. By bus: SITA Sud lines from Amalfi and Sorrento, stop on the main road. By train: Salerno or Vietri sul Mare station, then bus or ferry to Amalfi. Nearest airport: Naples Capodichino.
Participation is free and open to all: the procession takes place on public streets.
Wear comfortable shoes for the village stairways, bring a light jacket for the evening, and avoid flashes and intrusive filming during the procession. For updated times and itinerary, contact the Municipality of Conca dei Marini (+39 089 831301).
