Holy Week rituals featuring the Dead Christ, the Sorrowful Mother, and the nocturnal Cerca procession
In the heart of western Sicily, in Partinico (Metropolitan City of Palermo), Holy Week is marked by ancient and deeply felt devotion. Two distinct yet spiritually linked events define these days: the Rito della Cerca, a nocturnal procession held between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, and the Good Friday procession featuring the statues of the Dead Christ and the Sorrowful Mother. These moments draw hundreds of faithful to the streets and reveal the most authentic identity of this inland town near Palermo.
As the clock strikes midnight between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the evocative Rito della Cerca begins. The statue of the Sorrowful Mother, dressed in mourning, is carried in procession through the historic center, passing via Crispi, Corso dei Mille, Piazza Umberto I, and via Roma, starting and ending at the Beata Pina Suriano Sanctuary. The Madonna, symbol of a mother's grief searching for her Son during the Passion, stops at the Sepolcriโthe altars of repose set up in the churchesโin a true pilgrimage through the sites of Christ's suffering. A brass band accompanies the procession with funeral marches that punctuate the journey through the silence of the night.
On the evening of Good Friday, the grand procession organized by the Venerable Congregation of Saints Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus takes place. The focal points of the parade are the statues of the Dead Christ, resting in an urn with a bloodied face, and the Sorrowful Virgin, draped in black and gold with a silver pierced heart. The route starts from the Beata Pina Suriano Sanctuary and winds through the town along Corso dei Mille, via Bellini, and via Principe Amedeo, reaching Piazza Umberto I in front of the town hall, where the procession reaches its emotional climax amidst the band's music and the final rites.
The Good Friday rituals in Partinico are part of the broader tradition of Sicilian Holy Week processions, which animate numerous towns in the province of Palermo. In Partinico, popular participation is immense: the town-mandated traffic closures allow the events to unfold in total contemplation. For those visiting Sicily during this time, witnessing these rites means connecting with a vibrant popular religiosity, composed of confraternities, sacred statues, funeral marches, and devotion passed down through generations.
In the 2026 edition, the Partinico Holy Week rituals drew numerous faithful. On the night between April 2 and 3 (Maundy Thursday-Good Friday), the Rito della Cerca began at the stroke of midnight from the Beata Pina Suriano Sanctuary, with the statue of the Sorrowful Mother searching for her Son among the churches' Sepolcri, along via Crispi, Corso dei Mille, Piazza Umberto I, and via Roma. On Good Friday, April 3, the solemn procession of the Dead Christ and the Sorrowful Mother took place, organized by the Venerable Congregation of Saints Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus: the procession, which started from the Beata Pina Suriano Sanctuary, crossed Corso dei Mille, via Bellini, and via Principe Amedeo, reaching its emotional climax in Piazza Umberto I amidst the band's music.
