Two days of taste, rolling hills, and slow travel among the Monferrato Castles
Over the weekend of May 16th and 17th, the village of Montiglio Monferrato, in the province of Asti, joins the extensive Golosaria Monferrato circuit, an event celebrating the food and wine excellence of the territory nestled among the Monferrato Castles. Now in its twentieth edition, Golosaria involves over 40 municipalities in the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, centered around the theme "Taste, Home, and Hills"—a narrative of the rebirth of these lands, where foreigners and young people are choosing to invest and stay.
In Montiglio, the guiding principle is slow travel: the heart of the experience is a non-competitive walk, also suitable for bicycles, covering approximately 16 kilometers through the hills, with stops to sample local dishes. It is a slow and delicious way to discover the landscape of the Asti Monferrato, defined by vineyards, hazelnut groves, and ancient farmhouses.
Beyond the food and wine walk, the program includes a walking tour to discover the unique features and beauty of the village's historic center. There is also a focus on railway history: at the former freight warehouse of the Montiglio/Murisengo station, visitors can explore a model railway featuring reproductions of local landscapes, while the former ticket office hosts a documentary exhibition by the State Archives of Asti dedicated to the history of the Asti–Chivasso railway line.
Among the most original events, on Sunday morning at 11:00 AM, the inhabitants of the imaginary municipality of Trentacapre will gather—a playful and poetic occasion to celebrate the values of rural life and the countryside, perfectly in tune with the spirit of Golosaria.
Montiglio Monferrato offers the most authentic side of Golosaria: no massive crowds, just the pleasure of walking through the hills of the Piedmontese Monferrato, tasting local products, and rediscovering the history of a village and its railway. An ideal stop for those seeking slow, gastronomic tourism away from the most crowded circuits. Admission to the village events is free.
Montiglio Monferrato is located in the Lower Monferrato area of Asti, along the route between Asti and Chivasso. By car, it can be reached from the A21 motorway (Asti Est exit) heading north, or from the A4/A26 for those arriving from the Casale area. The Montiglio/Murisengo station is one of the key reference points for the event.
Admission to the events in Montiglio Monferrato is free. For the food and wine walk and certain tastings, reservations or a contribution for the dishes may be required; it is advisable to check the details on the official Golosaria website.
Wear comfortable shoes for the 16 km walk through the hills and bring water. Check the updated schedules for exhibitions and guided tours on the official website before you leave.
