Theatre, music, and dance between the Goleto Abbey and the Alta Irpinia region
The Goleto Festival is an annual summer performing arts event that has enlivened the Goleto Abbey complex for over a decade, located in the municipality of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi (province of Avellino, Campania). Founded in the 12th century by Saint William of Vercelli, the Goleto Abbey is one of the most evocative monuments in Alta Irpinia: with its Norman tower, overlapping churches, light-colored stone, and a natural amphitheater of hills, it transforms into an open-air auditorium on summer evenings. It is here that the festival stages its program, driven by the belief that heritage should not only be preserved but also inhabited.
The festival is promoted by the Rotary Club Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi Hirpinia Goleto, which has built the event over the years in collaboration with the "Domenico Cimarosa" State Conservatory of Music in Avellino and with the support of local entities and partners. The project has a dual soul: cultural and charitable. On one hand, it seeks to promote the inland areas of Campania, which are often left off the main performance circuits; on the other, it raises funds for the Rotary Foundation, which is historically committed to the international campaign against polio.
The Goleto Festival is not limited to a single genre: past editions have featured baroque and classical music concerts, wind ensembles, saxophone groups, theatrical performances, workshops, and dance projects. The common thread is artistic quality combined with a focus on education: many evenings are entrusted to young musicians and emerging companies, often from the "Cimarosa" Conservatory or local music schools and high schools in Irpinia, for whom the festival represents a genuine opportunity to debut before an audience.
In 2026, the festival reaches its thirteenth edition and expands its reach, adding a second fascinating venue to the Goleto Abbey: the Archaeological Park of Conza della Campania, just a few kilometers away, where the ruins of ancient Compsa emerge. The program ranges from Shakespearean theatre and youth ensemble music to original Neapolitan songs and contemporary dance, with a finale entirely dedicated to the theme of inclusion and the participation of dancers with disabilities.
Evenings begin at sunset, when the day's heat fades and the abbey's stone takes on a golden glow. The audience is the familiar, attentive crowd typical of the villages in Alta Irpinia: people arrive early, sit in anticipation, and linger to discuss the performance long after the final applause. Admission is free, a choice consistent with the festival's mission to bring high-level culture to areas where such offerings are rare.
The Goleto Festival is one of those events where the location is just as important as the performance. Watching a concert or a play with the abbey tower behind you and the mountains of Irpinia on the horizon is an unforgettable experience that restores the cultural centrality these inland lands of Campania deserve.
Promoted by the Rotary Club Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi Hirpinia Goleto, the 13th edition of the festival is divided into two windows—from July 23 to 27 and from August 2 to 7, 2026—and for the first time, it adds a second stage alongside the Goleto Abbey: the Archaeological Park of Conza della Campania. The keywords chosen by the organizers are culture, youth, and inclusion: a program that weaves together theatre, music, and dance to enhance the historical and landscape heritage of the inland Irpinia region.
It begins on July 23 with great classical theatre and concludes on August 7 with an evening entirely built around the theme of diversity and the value of every person. In between, there is space for local talent: very young instrumentalists from middle schools with musical curricula, music high schools, and the Conservatory, as well as original Neapolitan songs. All events start at 9:00 PM and are free and open to the public.
«Romeo and Juliet» by William Shakespeare, performed by the Sipario Aperto APS theatre company from Pagani, directed by Alessandro De Pascale, Luigi Fortino, and Fabrizio Manfredonia.
Concert by the Hirpinus Clarinet Ensemble, an orchestra of young Irpinian musicians from middle schools with musical curricula, music high schools, and the Conservatory, conducted by Maestro Marco Martone.
«Ogge, dimane…», a musical show for guitar and voice with the Anelli di Saturno duo and the voice of Gianluigi Esposito, under the direction of Maestro Antonio Saturno.
Closing evening with the Cantiere Danza Project: the performance «Prelude», the screening of the documentary «M.A.Y.A. Move As You Are», and the choreographic creation «NÒSTOS», signed by Hilde Grella and also interpreted by dancers with disabilities.
