About Gnocchi Festival

Established in 2024 by the Generazione Isola Superiore committee, the Gnocchi Festival brings the Campo dei Grilli neighborhood in the upper part of Isola del Liri, Frosinone, to life. This two-day popular festival features food stalls serving handmade gnocchi, briscola card tournaments, sports competitions, children's games, a craft market, live music, and a traditional grand finale with a lottery draw and fireworks.

A festival born from the neighborhood

The Gnocchi Festival is one of the youngest and most authentic events in the summer calendar of Isola del Liri, a town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. It was founded in 2024 by the Generazione Isola Superiore committee, a group mostly composed of local youths who did not want to see the Campo dei Grilli neighborhood, in the upper part of the town, slide into indifference. After about ten years during which nothing had been organized in the district, the festival brought families back to the streets, giving the neighborhood an event to call its own.

Gnocchi, the absolute stars

The dish around which the entire festival revolves is the one that gives the event its name: gnocchi, prepared according to traditional Ciociaria home-cooking methods and served at the food stalls that open in the late afternoon. Alongside the main dish, the kitchen offers other local specialties, desserts, and drinks, with affordable prices designed to welcome entire families. The service is managed by committee volunteers, and conviviality remains the hallmark of the evening: outdoor tables, chats between neighbors, and a rhythm that feels far from a manufactured event.

The typical two-day program

The formula developed in the first editions alternates gastronomy, games, and music throughout the entire weekend:

  • Saturday afternoon โ€” briscola tournament with registration, arm wrestling competition, and Pokรฉmon card tournament for the younger ones;
  • Saturday evening โ€” opening of the food stalls and live musical entertainment with local bands;
  • Sunday morning โ€” mass at the church of Santa Maria dei Fiori and blessing of the neighborhood, followed by the ecological bike ride with refreshments;
  • Sunday afternoon โ€” sports competitions and games for all ages, especially designed for children;
  • Sunday evening โ€” reopening of the stalls, live music, and, late in the evening, the lottery draw with prizes and a final fireworks display.

On both evenings, a craft market with handmade items and various goods is set up, accompanying the stroll through the festival area.

A late summer appointment

The festival takes place between the end of August and the first days of September: the first edition was held on September 7th and 8th, 2024, and the second on August 30th and 31st, 2025. It is therefore one of the last outdoor events of the summer season in Isola, when the evenings begin to cool down and the town gathers before the autumn restart.

Isola del Liri, the city of the waterfall

Those who arrive for the festival have the opportunity to discover one of the most unique villages in Lazio. Isola del Liri is famous for the Cascata Grande, which plunges about thirty meters right in the historic center, at the foot of the Boncompagni Viscogliosi castle: a nearly unique case in Italy of a natural waterfall integrated into the urban fabric. The city stands on an island formed by the splitting of the Liri river and is historically linked to the paper industry, which shaped its architecture and economy between the 19th and 20th centuries. The Campo dei Grilli neighborhood, which hosts the festival, is located in the upper part of the town, in a panoramic position overlooking the valley.

Why it is worth a visit

The Gnocchi Festival is not a massive event with thousands of visitors, and that is precisely where its appeal lies: it is an authentic neighborhood festival where the proceeds remain in the local area and the organization is entirely entrusted to residents. For those visiting Ciociaria at the end of summer, it represents a simple and sincere opportunity to get in touch with local life, between a plate of gnocchi and a game of briscola.

Gnocchi Festival โ€” edition 2026

Following the first two editions in 2024 and 2025, the Gnocchi Festival is expected to return to the Campo dei Grilli in Isola del Liri, in the province of Frosinone, between late August and early September 2026. At the moment, the Generazione Isola Superiore committee has not yet released the official dates or the program for the new edition.

The 2026 edition of the Gnocchi Festival in Isola del Liri has not yet been officially announced. The two previous editions took place between late August and early September, always in the Campo dei Grilli neighborhood, and the event is expected to maintain the same late-summer placement.

The Generazione Isola Superiore committee, which organizes the entire festival with the work of neighborhood volunteers, usually publishes dates and a detailed program on its Facebook page in the weeks preceding the event. It is therefore recommended to check there for updates before planning your visit.
