A musical tribute dedicated to the Paternò-born tenor Giulio Crimi
The Giulio Crimi Award is a musical recognition held annually in Paternò, in the Province of Catania, Sicily. The event was created to honor the legacy of Giulio Crimi (Paternò, 1885 - Rome, 1939), one of the most significant Italian tenors of the early 20th century. After his studies in Catania and his debut in Palermo in Il Trovatore, he graced the stages of London's Covent Garden and New York's Metropolitan Opera, where in 1918 he participated in the world premieres of Puccini's Il Tabarro and Gianni Schicchi. Upon retiring from the stage, he dedicated himself to teaching in Rome, where the famous baritone Tito Gobbi was among his students.
Through this award, the city of Paternò aims not only to preserve the memory of its illustrious citizen but also to showcase artists and cultural professionals who have brought prestige to music and represent Sicily in the operatic and musical landscape. The free-admission ceremony alternates between historical storytelling, award presentations, and musical performances, and has established itself as one of the most cherished events in the city's cultural life.
The award is promoted by the Musica&Movimento APS association, led by president Gianluca Cozzetto, with the patronage of the Municipality of Paternò and the local Pro Loco. Over the years, the award has seen the participation of sopranos, tenors, masters, and local educators, fostering a constant dialogue between new generations and the great Sicilian operatic tradition.
Nestled at the foot of Mount Etna, Paternò is a city rich in history, dominated by the Historical Hill and its Norman Castle.
