About Giro del Montalbano

The Giro del Montalbano is one of Tuscany's most long-standing and prestigious cycling races, reserved for the Elite and Under 23 categories. Every year in late May, dozens of national teams compete on the rolling roads of the Municipality of Carmignano, in the province of Prato, along a course of over 155 kilometers that starts in Seano and concludes with the demanding final climb to Piazza Verdi in Bacchereto. A classic on the federal calendar that has been launching young Italian cycling talents for nearly seventy years.

A classic of Tuscan cycling

The Giro del Montalbano is a road cycling race reserved for the Elite and Under 23 categories, held every year in late May on the hills of the Municipality of Carmignano, in the province of Prato, in the heart of Tuscany. Included in the national calendar of the Italian Cycling Federation, it is considered one of the most important amateur classics in the region, capable of attracting the best teams from the Italian youth circuit.

Organized by GS Bacchereto and UC Seanese Corse, the event is supported by the Municipality of Carmignano, the Province of Prato, and the Tuscany Region, confirming its deep roots in the territory and the sporting and social value it holds for the local community.

The route through the Montalbano hills

The course winds for approximately 155.2 kilometers over the rolling roads of the Carmignano area, with extensions towards Poggio a Caiano, Campi Bisenzio, and Signa. The race includes an initial section of about 48 kilometers followed by three laps of a circuit of approximately 36 kilometers, with repeated passages through the village of Bacchereto.

The highlight is the Madonna del Papa Mountain Grand Prix, a coveted intermediate finish line, while the challenge is almost always decided on the final uphill stretch leading to the finish in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi in Bacchereto. A spectacular finale that rewards the climbers and the most brilliant athletes in the closing stages.

Nearly seventy years of history

Born in the 1950s, the race has accompanied the growth of generations of cyclists, becoming a fixed appointment on the Tuscan calendar. It is traditionally held one week before the Elite/Under 23 Tuscan Championship, placing it in a highly prestigious moment of the season. Over the decades, the Giro del Montalbano has launched numerous young talents, and the riders who have participated include current managers and prominent figures in Italian cycling.

Carmignano, a land of wine and sport

The territory hosting the race is famous not only for cycling but also for its food and wine excellence: Carmignano DOCG, an ancient red wine, and the typical products of the Montalbano hills. Attending the Giro therefore also means discovering an authentic corner of Tuscany, made of hilly landscapes, olive groves, vineyards, and historic villages like Bacchereto and Seano.

The 70th edition

The 70th Giro del Montalbano was held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, on the roads of Carmignano, along the usual 155.2 kilometers from Seano to Bacchereto. To celebrate the important milestone, the organizers created a special commemorative jersey, designed to represent the entire history of the event.

The winner was Andrea Guerra from Vicenza (Beltrami TSA Tre Colli), 25 years old from Valli di Pasubio, who secured the victory with a decisive acceleration in the final climb towards Piazza Verdi, overtaking his breakaway companions. On the podium, behind him, were Luca Rosa (Sissio Team) and Tommaso Tessiore (Ciclistica Rostese).
