Food and wine, crafts, art, and music in the historic villages of Montesarchio
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
“Giorni al Borgo” is the flagship event of the Pro Loco of Montesarchio, in the municipality of Montesarchio, in the province of Benevento, Campania. For three evenings in September, the alleys, courtyards, cellars, and small squares of the historic center come alive, becoming one large walking route filled with stalls of local products, open artisan workshops, exhibitions, street performances, and folk music. This is not a festival concentrated in a single square, but an itinerary spread throughout the urban fabric: you walk, climb stairs, enter historic buildings, and eat where people live their daily lives for the rest of the year.
The festival was founded in 1996 with a clear goal: to promote and enhance the historic center of Montesarchio, reclaiming its spaces and returning them to residents and visitors. The formula chosen by the Pro Loco is itinerant: every year the festival changes (or expands) the featured village, so that all the ancient districts are rediscovered in rotation. In recent years, the route has involved Borgo San Francesco-Fontanelle, with its medieval layout, and Borgo Santo Spirito, a typical Aragonese-era settlement, where traces left by Angevin, Aragonese, and Spanish rule are still visible.
Food and wine are the pillars of the event. Along the route, local producers offer tastings of dishes from the Caudina and Sannita cuisine, cured meats, cheeses, bread, sweets, and local wines: the province of Benevento is, after all, one of the most important wine-growing areas in Campania. The stations are distributed throughout the villages, often set up inside 17th and 18th-century cellars and manor houses, and this blend of food and architecture is exactly what makes the experience different from a classic village fair.
The heritage of Montesarchio is remarkable: the village is dominated by the Tower and the Castle, which houses the National Archaeological Museum of Sannio Caudino, and the Pro Loco also offers experiential guided tours through the ancient districts outside of festival days.
Every year, the program includes street performances, buskers, folk music, and concerts scattered throughout the route, along with historical pageants and flag-wavers in editions that focused on re-enactments. There is no shortage of activities for children and families, with entertainment and games, as well as cultural moments like book presentations and talks on local history. The organization is handled by the Pro Loco with the support of the municipal administration, local associations, and dozens of volunteers and residents of the villages.
Montesarchio is located along the ancient route of the Via Appia, in the Valle Caudina, between Benevento and the Campanian plains: a strategic position that shaped its history as far back as the Samnite and Roman eras. The town is listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy, and “Giorni al Borgo” has become the defining annual appointment for the community, as recalled by Pro Loco president Alfredo Caturano at the close of the 2025 edition: not just an event, but an occasion where the town gathers around its identity and welcomes visitors.
“Giorni al Borgo,” organized by the Pro Loco, has been included in the main events of the 2026 summer program of the Municipality of Montesarchio, presented in June 2026. However, the exact dates and the program for the new edition have not yet been published: the calendar, as announced by the Administration, is defined month by month until the end of September. For those planning to attend, it is best to follow the Pro Loco Montesarchio channels and the official pages of the Municipality, where the program is usually released a few weeks before the event.
The new edition of “Giorni al Borgo” was announced by the Municipality of Montesarchio as part of the 2026 summer program, presented in June, where it appears among the main events alongside other initiatives organized by the Pro Loco. However, the official dates and the program have not yet been communicated, in line with the approach chosen by the Administration, which develops the calendar month by month until the end of September.
Based on previous editions, it is reasonable to expect three evenings in early September, with the usual route spread across the villages of the historic center: tastings of typical Sannio products, guided tours of monuments, exhibitions, ancient crafts, street performances, folk music, and activities for children. Information will be published on the official channels of the Pro Loco Montesarchio and the Municipality. This page will be updated as soon as the dates are confirmed.
Montesarchio is located in the province of Benevento, along the SS 7 Appia in the Valle Caudina: it is easily accessible by car from Benevento and the Naples area. The town is also served by the Montesarchio train station, on the Benevento-Cancello line. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.
The event takes place in the villages of the historic center, which are closed to traffic during the evenings: it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the edge of the center and continue on foot. The route is uphill and includes stairs, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
Admission to the festival and participation in the shows are traditionally free; you only pay for what you consume at the food and wine stations, with tastings at popular prices.
