About Gioeubia (Zobia)

The Gioeubia (or Zobia) is one of the oldest and most evocative traditions of the Varesotto and Alto Milanese area: on the last Thursday of January, a large straw effigy representing the old woman is set on fire, symbolically driving away the fears and negativity of the past year and welcoming the new one. In Cardano al Campo, the event is renewed in Piazza Ghiringhelli, where the bonfire is accompanied by saffron risotto with luganega, mulled wine, music, and contributions from schools. An evening of community that blends legend, folklore, and conviviality, organized by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Cardano al Campo.

The Gioeubia, a Varese tradition

In the heart of the province of Varese, the Municipality of Cardano al Campo celebrates the Gioeubia (locally also Zobia or Giöbia), one of the most deeply rooted events in the area between Varese, Gallaratese, and Alto Milanese. Tradition dictates that on the last Thursday of January, a large straw effigy depicting an old woman is burned in the square: the bonfire serves to bid farewell to winter, ward off fears, and welcome the new season.

The bonfire ritual in Piazza Ghiringhelli

In Cardano al Campo, the bonfire comes to life in Piazza Ghiringhelli, where the community gathers around the fire. The lighting of the bonfire is the highlight of the evening, eagerly awaited by young and old alike. According to tradition, the direction of the smoke and sparks is interpreted as an omen for the coming agricultural year.

Risotto, Luganega, and Conviviality

As is customary, the feast is accompanied by saffron risotto with luganega (the local sausage), mulled wine, and music. There are also contributions from schools, with drawings, stories, and workshops dedicated to the legend of the Gioeubia, and entertainment for families. It is a deeply popular, free, and open-to-all evening.

A legend passed down through generations

The Gioeubia has its roots in ancient peasant beliefs tied to the cycle of the seasons. In Cardano al Campo, as in other towns in the Varesotto region, the ritual is preserved and passed down from generation to generation, thanks to the commitment of the Municipality and the Pro Loco, who involve associations, schools, and residents in the organization of the festival each year.
