A single dancing giglio through the streets of Frattamaggiore, heir to the Nola tradition
In the heart of the province of Naples, the town of Frattamaggiore renews one of its most defining traditions every year: the Gigli Festival. This popular event has its roots in the famous Gigli Festival of Nola, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Over the years, it has taken on a unique character in Frattamaggiore, engaging the entire city in northern Campania.
Unlike in Nola, where numerous festival machines parade, the Frattamaggiore tradition is characterized by the presence of a single giglio: an imposing wooden structure, richly decorated and carried on the shoulders by bearers according to the ancient rite of the ballata (dance). It is precisely this choice that makes the local festival so intense and focused, with all attention directed toward that single machine that advances and dances along the streets of the center to the rhythm of music.
The beating heart of the event is the Formidabile Frattese paranza, the group of bearers who manage the dance, the musical aspect, and the staging of the giglio. The paranza is a highly regarded local institution: its ability to make the giglio move in harmony, with lifts, spins, and applauded stops, is what the public awaits with the greatest anticipation. The event is organized by the Nuova Generazione Vecchia Tradizione Committee, whose name perfectly summarizes the spirit of the festival: young energy at the service of an ancient rite.
The Gigli Festival is not just the final parade, but a journey of preparation that involves neighborhoods, families, and volunteers in the preceding weeks. Decorating the giglio, the rehearsals of the paranza, and the social gatherings build collective anticipation day after day. The final day, traditionally a Sunday in May, draws thousands of people to the streets to accompany the dancing giglio until the end of its route.
Immersed in the urban fabric of Frattamaggiore, in the province of Naples, the Gigli Festival represents a precious opportunity to discover one of the most vibrant expressions of popular culture in Campania up close.
The 2026 Gigli Festival of Frattamaggiore renewed the appointment with one of the most beloved popular traditions of the city in the province of Naples. After weeks of preparation and rehearsals, the event culminated in the final parade on Sunday, May 10, 2026, when the giglio was carried on shoulders and made to dance along the streets of the center by the Formidabile Frattese paranza. Thousands of people accompanied the festival machine in an atmosphere of great participation and civic pride.
Frattamaggiore is located in the area north of Naples and is well-connected to the main city. By train, the town is served by the Frattamaggiore-Grumo Nevano railway station (regional line). By car, it is easily reached from the Naples Tangenziale and the Asse Mediano; during the days of the festival, traffic restrictions are likely in the center area affected by the parade.
On the day of the final dance, it is advisable to reach the center early and continue on foot. The event takes place outdoors: comfortable shoes are recommended. The route and times are defined year by year by the organizing committee.
Participation is free and open to all, as it is a popular festival that takes place along the city streets.
