Half a century of Nativity scenes in the Via Cappuccini Public Park, amidst ancient crafts and twinkling lights
In the heart of the Picentino Valley, about fifteen kilometers from Salerno, Giffoni Valle Piana is known worldwide for its children's film festival. However, there is another event that has marked the life of the town for half a century and belongs entirely to the community: the Living Nativity, set up every year between Christmas and Epiphany in the Via Cappuccini Public Park, the green area adjacent to the San Francesco Monumental Complex. In the winter of 2025-2026, the event reached its 51st edition, making it one of the longest-running Nativity representations in the province of Salerno and the entire Campania region.
The first performance dates back to the mid-seventies, and the Giffoni living nativity has never stopped since. The only interruption occurred in the winter of 2020, when the health emergency prevented the usual setup with over a hundred actors: the association chose to replace the people with large wooden silhouettes placed next to the San Francesco Monumental Complex, under the motto "Stop to reflect and pray," so as not to leave the town without its Christmas symbol. The organization is entrusted to the Giffoni Storica association, which mobilizes dozens of volunteers of all ages every year, with the support of the Municipality of Giffoni Valle Piana.
You enter the park at nightfall, starting at 6:00 PM, when the soft lights and the illumination of the path redesign the public park as an ancient village. The organizers describe it as "an emotional journey through tradition, spirituality, and history": along the route, you encounter scenes of daily life from the past, leading up to the manger that closes the itinerary. The elements that characterize the visit are:
The living nativity is the most anticipated event of the "Christmas in Giffoni Valle Piana" calendar, promoted by the Municipality from November 29, 2025, to January 6, 2026. Alongside the nativity evenings, the municipal program featured the Elves' Workshop, two Christmas parades (December 8 and 21), the tree lighting, the Immaculate Conception concert in the church of San Francesco, the Cod Festival organized by Pro Vassi, the children's tombola with a puppet show, and, on January 6, the distribution of Befana stockings.
During the same period, the Pro Loco Giffoni Valle Piana curated the 30th International Nativity Art Exhibition at the San Francesco Monumental Complex, from December 6, 2025, to January 6, 2026: these are two distinct and complementary events that make the town one of the Campania capitals of nativity culture during those weeks. Those arriving for the day can therefore visit the exhibition in the afternoon and continue in the evening with the living nativity.
Campania is the Italian region that has made the nativity scene a popular language more than any other: from the Neapolitan tradition of San Gregorio Armeno to the dozens of living nativities set up in the villages of Irpinia, Sannio, Cilento, and the Picentini Mountains. Giffoni Valle Piana fits into this geography with a formula all its own, which does not use the alleys of the historic center but the public park, and which has managed to hold together the religious and civic dimensions for fifty years.
For visitors arriving from outside the region, the evening at the nativity is also an opportunity to discover an area little touched by mass tourism: the Picentino Valley, its hazelnut groves, the small hillside villages behind the Sele plain, and the proximity to Salerno, Paestum, and the Amalfi Coast.
After the evenings at the end of December, the Giffoni Valle Piana Living Nativity lit up again for the second block of openings of the 51st edition: Sunday, January 4, Monday, January 5, and Tuesday, January 6, 2026, always starting at 6:00 PM in the Via Cappuccini Public Park. It is traditionally the most anticipated moment, where the route concludes with the arrival of the Epiphany and the entire town converges in the park.
January 6, 2026, also coincided with the last day of the 30th International Nativity Art Exhibition set up by the Pro Loco in the San Francesco Monumental Complex, open since December 6. On the same day, the "Christmas in Giffoni Valle Piana" calendar included the distribution of Befana stockings in the morning, thus closing a program that began on November 29, 2025.
