Italy's first open-air and site-specific photography festival
The Gibellina Photoroad Open Air & Site-Specific Festival is Italy's first photography and visual arts festival entirely conceived as an open-air, site-specific event. Since its inception in 2016, it has turned the town of Gibellina, in the province of Trapani, Sicily, into a sprawling open-air museum where photographic images step out of galleries to engage with the town's squares, architecture, and the Belìce Valley landscape.
Rebuilt following the 1968 Belìce earthquake, Gibellina is now one of Italy's most striking contemporary art cities, dotted with works by renowned artists and a system of monumental squares. The festival leverages this extraordinary context and the lack of visual and light pollution to showcase large-format prints, installations, and projections that interact with the urban fabric. Venues range from the MAC - Museum of Contemporary Art to the Fondazione Orestiadi at the Baglio di Stefano, from the Mother Church to the Consagra Theatre, and the System of Squares to the Botanical Garden.
The festival brings together big names in international photography and emerging young talents. Each edition features a strong curatorial theme: all projects are designed to be strictly site-specific, created expressly for the spaces of Gibellina. The artistic direction is led by Arianna Catania, while the organization is managed by the On Image Association, with the support of the Municipality of Gibellina and the Fondazione Orestiadi.
Gibellina has been designated Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026: the festival is part of this major cultural project that establishes the Trapani town as a landmark for art and photography in the Mediterranean. An event that blends contemporary visual experimentation with reflection on memory, time, and the identity of a territory reborn through art.
The sixth edition of the Gibellina Photoroad Open Air & Site-Specific Festival is confirmed on the official website from July 4 to September 6, 2026, with opening days scheduled for July 4 and 5. The 2026 edition takes on a special significance as it coincides with the proclamation of Gibellina as the Italian Capital of Contemporary Art 2026.
The festival will return to transform the squares and architecture of the town of Gibellina, in the province of Trapani, into a large open-air museum dedicated to photography and visual arts. The full program, including the list of photographers, exhibitions, and site-specific installations, will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
Gibellina is located in the hinterland of the Trapani province, Sicily. The nearest airports are Trapani-Birgi and Palermo Falcone-Borsellino. Renting a car is recommended; bus connections are available via Autoservizi Salemi.
The festival takes place largely in the city's public spaces, with an open-air exhibition route that is free to explore. For specific exhibitions and venues, please check the official website for details and opening hours.
