The widespread contemporary art festival in the Lower Monferrato
Germinale – Monferrato Art Fest is a widespread contemporary art event that brings the hills of the Lower Monferrato—a UNESCO World Heritage site—to life every autumn. Promoted by the Quasi Fondazione Carlo Gloria APS, the festival is based in Castagnole Monferrato, a small town in the province of Asti, Piedmont, and radiates from there to dozens of villages across the provinces of Asti and Alessandria.
The model is that of a widespread festival: rather than concentrating in a single location, Germinale brings art into the territory's iconic sites—castles, churches, farmhouses, and repurposed public spaces—transforming the entire hilly landscape into an exhibition route to be explored on foot or by car, from village to village.
Each edition revolves around a curatorial theme that engages in a dialogue between artistic research and the history, geology, and traditions of Monferrato. The works—exhibitions, installations, and site-specific projects—are created by a selection of artists blending established names with new generations, often through an artist-in-residence program hosted in local municipalities.
Alongside the exhibitions, the calendar includes talks, performances, shows, and meetings distributed throughout the programming weekends, as well as initiatives dedicated to supporting emerging artists, such as residency calls and acquisition awards.
The beating heart of the event is Castagnole Monferrato, where the town's historic spaces—such as the Ex Asilo Regina Elena and the La Mercantile residence—host collective exhibitions and serve as the curatorial headquarters. From here, visitors can set off to discover the other venues scattered among the villages of the Lower Monferrato.
Germinale confirms itself as one of the most original appointments in the Piedmontese cultural calendar, capable of enhancing the small towns of the Province of Asti through the language of contemporary art.
The third edition of Germinale – Monferrato Art Fest is scheduled from September 10 to October 4, 2026, spread across approximately 17 municipalities of the Lower Monferrato between the provinces of Asti and Alessandria. The headquarters remain in Castagnole Monferrato, with the Ex Asilo Regina Elena as the central venue for collective exhibitions.
The 2026 theme, curated by Francesca Canfora, is "Di marne feconde, un mare": a reflection on the subsoil of Monferrato—its marls, its ancient marine origin—as a repository of memory and a symbol of the invisible. The edition brings together about 50 artists, including established names and new generations, with exhibitions, installations, and site-specific projects.
Among the announced novelties are ten artist residencies hosted in local municipalities and new permanent works planned in Villadeati and Rinco di Montiglio Monferrato. The public program is structured over several weekends with talks, workshops, and performances.
Dates and the theme for the 2026 edition are confirmed by multiple sources; the detailed calendar of venues, times, and individual appointments will be published progressively on the official website germinale.art in the weeks leading up to the opening.
Edition curated by Francesca Canfora, theme "Di marne feconde, un mare". About 50 artists, 10 artist residencies, exhibitions, and site-specific projects spread across about 17 municipalities of the Lower Monferrato. Central venue: Ex Asilo Regina Elena, Castagnole Monferrato. New permanent works planned in Villadeati and Rinco (Montiglio Monferrato). The detailed day-by-day program is currently being published on the official website.
Castagnole Monferrato can be reached by car from Asti (about 15 km) and from the Asti Est motorway exit (A21 Turin–Piacenza). The nearest train station is Asti, which is well-connected to Turin and Alessandria.
As this is a festival spread across multiple locations, exhibitions are generally free to enter during the programming weekends. We recommend checking the official website germinale.art for the opening hours of individual venues, the map of participating municipalities, and information on booking guided tours and performances.
To visit multiple locations, it is best to travel by car and dedicate at least one full day to the route between the villages. Take advantage of the autumn season to combine your visit with the grape harvest and the food and wine festivals of Monferrato.
