The historic January running race in Santa Maria degli Angeli
The Gennaiola is one of the most established running races in Umbria: it takes place in January in Santa Maria degli Angeli, a populous district of Assisi (Province of Perugia), and traditionally opens the competitive season for regional running. Organized by the Assisi Runners association, the event attracts hundreds of athletes each year, including registered competitors and amateurs.
The main race is a 10 km run on the city circuit of Santa Maria degli Angeli, with the dome of the Papal Basilica as a backdrop. Alongside the main competition, there are races dedicated to youth categories, demonstrating the event's focus on sport and its formative values. The Gennaiola also includes the Vincenzo Cavanna Memorial.
More than just a race, the Gennaiola is a celebration for the community of Santa Maria degli Angeli: the streets fill with spectators, Umbrian running clubs gather, and the town experiences a morning of outdoor sport. The growing technical caliber of the race has made it a benchmark event in the FIDAL regional calendar.
The 42nd Gennaiola took place on Sunday, January 25, 2026, in Santa Maria degli Angeli, a district of Assisi, with the extraordinary participation of approximately 950 athletes. The race, a FIDAL-certified 10 km, was valid as the Regional Championship and included in the official regional circuit; it was also paired with the 16th Vincenzo Cavanna Memorial.
Among the men, Loitanyang Simon Kibet (U.P. Policiano Arezzo Atletica) won with a time of 30'06"; among the women, Melissa Fracassini (Atl. ARCS CUS Perugia) took first place in 34'06". There was also space for youth races, in the spirit of sport and its values.
Winners: men — Loitanyang Simon Kibet (U.P. Policiano Arezzo Atletica), 30'06"; women — Melissa Fracassini (Atl. ARCS CUS Perugia), 34'06".
Santa Maria degli Angeli (Assisi, PG) is served by the Assisi-Santa Maria degli Angeli train station, a short walk from the district center. By car, take the SS75 exit and the Perugia-Bettolle junction.
Participation in the competitive race is reserved for registered athletes according to FIDAL regulations; non-competitive and youth events are also available. For registration and fees, contact the Assisi Runners organization.
