The storytelling festival for children and young people that invades Assisi
Birba chi legge - Festival of Stories is the storytelling festival for children and young people in Assisi, in the province of Perugia. For a long weekend in September, the city transforms into a living book: stories come out of the pages and "invade" squares, alleys, gardens, and symbolic places in the historic center, from the Rocca to the Roman Forum, from the Crypt of San Rufino to Monte Frumentario, up to the Bosco di San Francesco.
The festival offers stories that are read, narrated, sung, danced, drawn, and dramatized: itinerant shows and children's theater, creative and musical workshops, literary walks, book presentations, meetings with authors and illustrators, and training seminars for teachers and operators. A program designed to engage children, young people, families, and enthusiasts of all ages.
Conceived and organized by the Birba association in collaboration with the Municipality of Assisi and with the support of the Fondazione Perugia, the festival promotes reading as a shared and joyful experience, while enhancing the historical and artistic heritage of Assisi, which becomes the natural setting for the tales. Among the events, there is also the award ceremony for the national competition "A library in every school".
The 2026 edition of Birba chi legge takes place in Assisi from September 17 to 20. For a long weekend, the city hosts stories that are read, narrated, sung, danced, drawn, and dramatized, with routes that cross squares, alleys, and symbolic places in the historic center. The festival, conceived by the Birba association with the Municipality of Assisi and the support of the Fondazione Perugia, involves children, young people, families, and enthusiasts of all ages.
The detailed 2026 program, with show titles, guests, and times, will be published by the Birba association closer to the event on birbachilegge.it. Usual festival structure (September 17-20):
