An authentic, community-driven village Carnival

The Genazzano Carnival is one of the most anticipated winter events in the town of Genazzano, a village in the Monti Prenestini area near Rome, in the heart of the Lazio region. The meaning of the Burning of the Carnival King

As in many carnivals in Central Italy, the festival concludes with the burning of an effigy representing the Carnival King. This is an ancient, peasant-rooted ritual: burning the sovereign of the festival symbolically marks the end of a time of excess and rule-breaking, ushering in the season of Lent. For visitors, it is the most evocative moment, as the entire town gathers around the bonfire before the fireworks begin.

Who organizes it

The event is directed by the Pro Loco Genazzano, a historic association that marks the village's entire year with its events: from the Feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot to the Palio di Brancaleone, and from the Flower Festival of the Sacred Heart to the Festival of Oil and New Wine of Saint Nicholas, the town's patron saint. The Carnival effectively kicks off this calendar and involves the entire local community, with the support of the Municipality of Genazzano.
