The winter festival on the slopes of the Schwemmalm in the Ultental valley
Gaudi 'N Snow is the winter festival of the Schwemmalm ski area, bringing music and cheer to the heights above Santa Valburga, in the municipality of Ultimo/Ulten, in the province of Bolzano (South Tyrol). The name says it all: in the local South Tyrolean dialect, Gaudi means "fun," and that is exactly the order of the day. The event's motto has become a local catchphrase: skiing as a warm-up, Gaudi as the highlight.
The heart of the festival is the Ausser Schwemmalm, a mountain hut reachable via the ski area's lifts. The Schwemmalm stretches between 1,505 and 2,625 meters above sea level, with about 27 kilometers of slopes served by eight ski lifts. The valley station is located in Pracupola/Kuppelwies, a village in the Ultental valley, where you will find ample parking and dining options. The area is part of the Ortler Skiarena circuit and is prized for its reliable snow conditions and sunny slopes nestled in the quiet Ultental valley, one of the most authentic and least touristy valleys in South Tyrol.
Gaudi 'N Snow is not a competition or a sporting event: it is a day designed for gathering on the snow, between one run and the next, with music, drinks, and the classic mountain après-ski vibe. Skiers, snowboarders, families, and curious visitors gather in front of the hut to celebrate winter in the informal, cheerful setting typical of South Tyrolean mountain huts. Admission is free, making the event accessible to everyone who heads up the mountain.
Festivals like Gaudi 'N Snow are part of South Tyrol's winter culture, where mountain life intertwines with the conviviality of the huts and a passion for the snow. In a compact, family-friendly valley like the Ultental, these events are an opportunity to experience the Schwemmalm not just as a ski area, but as a place for the local community and guests to meet and celebrate.
