Three days of free jazz in the heart of the Garbatella district
The Garbatella Jazz Festival is one of the longest-running and most beloved events in the independent music scene of Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Lazio. Born in the heart of Garbatella—the working-class district designed in the 1920s that has become a symbol of Roman identity—the festival has built a loyal audience that returns every June to the same spot: La Villetta, a social and cultural space on Via Francesco Passino, with a secondary entrance on Via degli Armatori.
The formula has never changed, and that is precisely its strength: three consecutive evenings, two concerts per night, always free admission. No reservations, no economic barriers. Those who arrive early find a seat under the trees in the courtyard; those who arrive later listen while standing with a drink in hand. It is a festival experienced like a neighborhood block party, yet with a meticulously curated artistic program.
Behind the musical choices is saxophonist Pasquale Innarella, a historic figure in Roman jazz, who has based the festival on a precise principle: giving space to groups that are truly active in the local area and to ensembles with original projects, rather than chasing big-name headliners. The result is a program where tributes to American jazz masters—Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter, Jim Hall—coexist with original repertoires, including forays into Mediterranean melody, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and bossa nova.
The organization is managed by the Cara Garbatella association together with the Villetta Social Lab, under the patronage of Municipio Roma VIII. A structure entirely based on association and volunteer work, which explains both the free admission and the informal atmosphere of the evenings.
The Garbatella Jazz Festival is not limited to the stage. Each edition hosts book presentations related to jazz history, independent publisher stalls, neighborhood radio, and local associations. The culinary side is managed directly by the venue: the tavern and cocktail bar remain open throughout the evenings, offering simple cuisine at popular prices.
Visitors to Rome in the summer find a huge number of outdoor festivals, many of which are expensive and tourist-oriented. The Garbatella Jazz Festival is the exact opposite: an event designed for those who live in the neighborhood, open to anyone who wants to join. Surrounding it, Garbatella offers one of the most fascinating urban walks in the capital, among historic housing blocks, staircases, suburban hotels, and Piazza Benedetto Brin, all within walking distance of the metro station.
Twenty years of activity have made this festival a benchmark for Roman musicians, often the first stage where a new ensemble presents itself to the public. For enthusiasts, it is the opportunity to hear six different projects over three evenings without spending a single euro.
The twentieth edition, scheduled from June 18 to 20, 2026, celebrated two decades of activity without betraying its original spirit: free admission, an open courtyard, and a focus on original projects by Roman musicians. The festival, organized by Cara Garbatella and Villetta Social Lab, took place entirely at La Villetta, at Via Francesco Passino 26.
The theme of the first evening was a tribute to Gato Barbieri, with the presentation of Andrea Polinelli's book and a concert by his Gato Reloaded Quartet. Subsequent evenings alternated between original repertoires and tributes to jazz masters, from Horace Silver onwards.
All events were held at La Villetta, Via Francesco Passino 26 (entrance also from Via degli Armatori 3), with free admission. During the evenings, book stalls, neighborhood radio, a tavern, and a cocktail bar were active.
La Villetta is located at Via Francesco Passino 26, with an alternative entrance at Via degli Armatori 3, in the Garbatella district. By metro: Line B, Garbatella stop, then about a 5-minute walk. By train: Roma Ostiense station, about a 15-minute walk. Parking in the area is difficult on summer evenings: public transport is highly recommended.
Admission to all concerts is free, with no reservation required. A tavern and cocktail bar operate on-site with popular prices.
Arrive at least half an hour before the first set to find a seat in the courtyard. The evenings take place outdoors: in case of bad weather, it is advisable to check for any changes by calling the organization's number.
