The historic Galliate Carnival featuring the Manghin and Manghina masks
The Galliate Carnival is one of the most beloved events in the festive calendar of the West Ticino region, in the heart of the Novara area. It takes place in Galliate, in the province of Novara, Piedmont, and every year it transforms the town center into a riot of color, confetti, streamers, and music. The event dates back to 1971, when a large self-propelled rooster float debuted as the first modern-style float, and it has grown ever since, reaching its 54th edition in 2026.
At the heart of the Galliate tradition are the two local masks, Manghin and Manghina. During the opening ceremony, they are symbolically presented with the keys to the city, a ritual that officially kicks off the celebrations. Accompanied by their folk group, the masks enliven the festival with traditional dances and a characteristic satirical speech that, blending humor and seriousness, shines a light on local town affairs.
The program spans several days. Following the inauguration in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, featuring entertainment, balloon modeling, and face painting, the most anticipated moment is the grand parade of allegorical floats and masks that winds through the town streets, starting from Piazza San Giuseppe and ending in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Meticulously crafted floats, masked groups, street performers, and great music accompany a large, festive crowd. There is also the Children's Carnival, featuring shows and snacks designed for the little ones.
The Galliate Carnival does not stay within its own borders: the floats and masked groups also participate in parades in neighboring towns, such as Romentino and Turbigo, strengthening ties with the West Ticino territory. It is this sense of community and friendship between towns that makes the Galliate Carnival an event of strong local identity.
Like any self-respecting Carnival, the celebration in Galliate also extends to the table: the distribution of tortelli and traditional sweets accompanies the festive days, with refreshment stands set up in the squares. It is an opportunity to experience Piedmontese conviviality in a cheerful and carefree atmosphere, between one parade and the next.
Galliate is located in the province of Novara and is easily accessible by car via the A4 motorway (Novara Est exit) and the state road towards Ticino. By train, the Galliate station is on the Novara-Sesto Calende-Luino line.
Admission to all Carnival events is free.
The parades and main events are held in the historic center, particularly in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and along the route starting from Piazza San Giuseppe. The Children's Carnival takes place at the Sala Don Giuseppe Manfredda.
