The mushroom festival in the heart of the upper Bormida Valley woods
Funghi in Piazza is the festival dedicated to mushrooms in Calizzano, a mountain village in the upper Bormida Valley in the province of Savona. It is held on the second Sunday of October and celebrates one of the most prized products of the local woods, in an area renowned for the quality and abundance of its mushrooms. In 2026, the event will reach its 31st edition.
The day enlivens the village with stands of local products and an artisan market. The cultural heart of the festival is the mycological exhibition curated by the group 'Il Cerchio delle Streghe', which displays the numerous species of mushrooms found in the area, offering visitors an opportunity to learn and raise awareness about responsible foraging.
For nature lovers, the festival offers excursions in the Bosco delle Streghe, to discover the woodland environment surrounding Calizzano, which gives the area its fairytale character. It's a way to combine the village festival with a direct experience of the places where the celebrated products originate.
A popular holiday destination for its nature and gastronomy, Calizzano is one of the gems of the upper Bormida Valley. Funghi in Piazza, organized by the Municipality and the Pro Loco (local tourism board), highlights its woodland and mycological identity, on an autumn day that attracts enthusiasts and curious visitors from all over the region.
