The mushroom festival in the heart of the high Val Bormida woods
Funghi in Piazza is the festival dedicated to mushrooms in Calizzano, a mountain village in the high Val Bormida in the province of Savona. It is held on the second Sunday of October and celebrates one of the most prized products of the local woods, in an area renowned for the quality and abundance of its mushrooms. In 2026, the event will reach its 31st edition.
The day enlivens the village with stands of typical products and an artisan market. The cultural heart of the festival is the mycological exhibition curated by the group 'Il Cerchio delle Streghe', which displays the numerous mushroom species of the territory, offering visitors an opportunity for learning and raising awareness about responsible foraging.
For nature lovers, the festival offers excursions in the Bosco delle Streghe, to discover the woodland environment surrounding Calizzano, which gives the area its fairytale character. It's a way to combine the village festival with direct experience of the places from which the celebrated products originate.
