A festival that walks through the city

Frosinone in Theatre is the summer theatre festival hosted by the Municipality of Frosinone, the capital of the province of the same name and the heart of the Ciociaria region in southern Lazio. The formula is simple and well-established: instead of concentrating performances in a single venue, the festival moves from evening to evening, bringing the stage directly into the city's neighbourhoods and squares. Piazza dello Scalo, the Villa Comunale, the Cavoni district, Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Piazzale Europa, and Corso Lazio turn into open-air auditoriums under the July sky.

The project and its organisers

The initiative is promoted by the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Frosinone in collaboration with ATCL — Associazione Teatrale fra i Comuni del Lazio, the regional multidisciplinary circuit that supports live performances in dozens of towns across the region. The stated goal is to restore culture to its most authentic role: being accessible, vibrant, and shared. For this reason, all performances are free of charge and take place in public spaces, with no barriers and no need for reservations.

What to expect

The programme is intentionally diverse, designed for audiences of all ages: it ranges from brilliant comedy to musical theatre, from autobiographical storytelling to Roman dialectal comedy, with forays into magic and variety shows. These are light-hearted yet meaningful evenings, alternating laughter with moments of reflection on family relationships, the contradictions of daily life, and social roles.

Frosinone in the summer

Frosinone experiences summer primarily in the upper part of the city and along its main commercial axes, and the festival takes full advantage of this urban geography: every evening is an opportunity to rediscover a different public space, from the station square to the gardens of the Villa Comunale. This choice has a clear social value in a city that, like many medium-sized capitals in Lazio, seeks to bring life back to its peripheral districts as well as the historic centre.

The Ciociaria cultural context

Ciociaria has a long tradition of popular theatre and dialectal comedy, fuelled by its proximity to Rome and its close ties to the capital's entertainment world: many of the performers on the festival stages are well-known faces from brilliant theatre and Roman television. The festival also dialogues with the winter season of the Teatro Vittoria in Frosinone, also organised in collaboration with ATCL, of which it serves as the natural summer, open-air extension.

Why attend

Frosinone in Theatre is one of the easiest ways to connect with the cultural life of the capital: no tickets, no formalities, just a chair or a step in the square and a show that begins at dusk. For those visiting Ciociaria in summer, perhaps between stops in Fiuggi, Alatri, or Anagni, it is also a unique way to get to know the city and its inhabitants, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
