The six districts of Monte San Giovanni Campano face off on the Meridiana pitch
The Frazioni Tournament in Monte San Giovanni Campano, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), is one of the most heartfelt summer sporting events in the Ciociaria region. For a few evenings in July, the town's six districts field their own teams to compete for the title before a crowd that fills the stands of the La Meridiana sports centre. It is more than just a football competition: it is a moment of gathering, sharing, and identity for the entire local community, where sport, passion, and a sense of belonging blend naturally.
The tournament is divided into two groups of three teams, each representing a district of the municipality. The first group brings together La Lucca, Monte Centro, and Porrino; the second features Anitrella, Chiaiamari, and Colli. Each team brings its own colours, supporters, and a local rivalry that renews itself year after year, always in the spirit of sportsmanship.
The format follows the classic summer tournament style: an initial group stage where teams face off in the opening evenings, followed by play-offs, semi-finals, and finally the grand final, traditionally held on a Sunday. Matches are played after sunset, when the heat of the Ciociarian day fades and the pitch fills with families, youths, and organised fan groups. At the end of the event, numerous awards are presented: prizes for teams, individual players, and the most enthusiastic supporters, with special attention given to those who brought the stands to life.
First-time visitors are struck by the atmosphere: banners, flags, improvised chants, and a constant buzz of conversation around the pitch. The Frazioni Tournament is, in effect, the town's summer festival. The local districts, scattered across the hills overlooking the Liri Valley, find here an opportunity to meet up: those who aren't playing are cheering, those who aren't cheering are commenting, and the evening continues long after the final whistle.
The municipality of Monte San Giovanni Campano is best known for its medieval castle, where, according to tradition, the young Thomas Aquinas was held prisoner by his family for his decision to join the Dominican order. The historic village, perched on a spur, preserves narrow alleys, towers, and panoramic views of the Ciociaria; the surrounding districts that animate the tournament are scattered nearby. The area is also a land of good country food, with extra virgin olive oil, cured meats, and homemade pasta that perfectly accompany summer evenings.
For a visitor, the Frazioni Tournament is an authentic window into how summer is experienced in a town in southern Lazio: no tourist staging, just provincial football played with seriousness and lived with enthusiasm. It is a simple and direct way to connect with the local community, between a match and a chat on the sidelines.
The 2026 Frazioni Tournament brought together the six teams from the local districts at the La Meridiana sports centre. In Group 1, La Lucca, Monte Centro, and Porrino faced off; in Group 2, Anitrella, Chiaiamari, and Colli competed.
The opening evening on July 6th saw a very engaged crowd, confirming how deeply rooted this event is in the community. The schedule then intensified up to the final on Sunday, July 12th, with numerous awards presented to participating teams, individual players, and fan groups.
All matches were played at the La Meridiana sports centre in Monte San Giovanni Campano.

Matches are played in the evening, starting around 8:30 PM. For up-to-date information on entry and the schedule, it is best to contact the Municipality of Monte San Giovanni Campano (tel. +39 0775 289901) or follow the social media channels of the participating districts.
Bring a light sweatshirt for the evenings: even in July, the temperature drops in the hills after sunset. Arrive a little early for the semi-final and final evenings, when attendance is higher.
