A city that plays in harmony

The Frascati Music Festival is the annual event that, around June 21st, officially kicks off the summer season in the pearl of the Castelli Romani. For one night, the historic center of the town of Frascati, located in the province of Rome in the heart of the Lazio region, ceases to be a simple grid of streets and becomes a continuous stage: eighteen squares and streets host concerts, acoustic sets, choirs, DJ sets, and performances, with a program that in the 2026 edition exceeded thirty performances running from late afternoon until late at night.

The European roots of the festival

The initiative stems from the Fête de la Musique, conceived in France in 1982 and subsequently spread throughout Europe: free, open-air music played by professionals and amateurs alike on the same day, the summer solstice. In Italy, the network is coordinated by the AIPFM, and Frascati has participated for years with its own unique formula based on open artist applications: anyone who plays, sings, or proposes a musical project can register in the preceding weeks to secure a spot on the bill. This is why the program is so diverse and unpredictable, and why established bands share the spotlight with young groups from the Tusculum area.

Where the music plays

The festival map changes every year, but the recurring venues are now well-known to the locals: Piazza San Pietro, in front of the Cathedral, which typically hosts a succession of concerts until late; Piazza San Rocco and Via Borgo San Rocco, with their more popular character; the Passeggiata Fuori Porta, overlooking the panorama towards Rome; and the Tusculan Museum at the Scuderie Aldobrandini, which adds a cultural dimension to the music. Added to these are the courtyards, restaurant terraces, and shop windows that become small, improvised stages.

More than just concerts

Over the years, the Frascati formula has expanded the scope of the event: alongside the concerts themselves, the program hosts book presentations, karaoke, fashion shows, live painting sessions, and open-air gatherings. This choice is consistent with the underlying concept, which is not that of a festival with a single stage and a headliner, but a widespread city celebration where the audience walks around, moves from one alley to another, and builds their own listening itinerary.

Music and the Castelli Romani

Frascati has always been a city of Tusculan villas, wine cellars, and DOC white wine, and the Music Festival naturally builds upon this convivial vocation. The fraschette (traditional taverns) and local establishments in the center remain open, and for many visitors from Rome, the evening is the perfect opportunity to combine a musical tour with a traditional dinner of porchetta, coppiette, and Castelli wine. The event also opens the calendar of the Estate Tuscolana, the municipal summer festival that continues throughout the season at Villa Torlonia and the Scuderie Aldobrandini with music, theater, and art.
