Zeffirelli's Aida in the jewel box of the Teatro Verdi in Busseto
Among the operas of the XXVI edition of the Verdi Festival 2026, Aida finds its home in the Giuseppe Verdi Theatre of Busseto, in the heart of the Province of Parma, in Emilia-Romagna. Staging it in the composer's birthplace, and moreover in the tiny hall named after the Maestro, gives this production a unique symbolic value: Verdi's grand Egyptian fresco is brought back to the chamber and intimate dimension that the small theatre imposes, in a close dialogue between orchestra, voices, and audience.
The production revives the historic staging signed by Franco Zeffirelli, one of the most beloved productions of Verdi's opera, here reimagined for the intimate spaces of the Teatro Verdi in Busseto. On the podium is conductor Giuseppe Mengoli, leading a cast of performers including Federica Vitali in the title role, Vincenzo Costanzo, and Teresa Iervolino. Four performances are scheduled: October 2, 9, 16, and 25, 2026.
The entire XXVI edition of the Festival, scheduled from October 1 to 25, 2026, between Parma and Busseto, is dedicated to the theme «Distant Worlds», a reflection on the fascination of exoticism that permeated 19th-century European culture and on the relationship between peoples and cultures, the deep heart of Verdi's theatre. Alongside Aida in Busseto, the program features Alzira and Nabucco at the Teatro Regio in Parma, as well as the Messa da Requiem, the Verdi Gala, and the distributed review Verdi Off.
Inaugurated in 1868, the Giuseppe Verdi Theatre of Busseto is an Italian-style theatre of rare elegance, housed within the town's Rocca (fortress). With its reduced capacity, it is considered a precious jewel box, capable of offering a close-up and extraordinary listening experience. Over the years of the Festival, it has become the privileged venue for the most experimental and intimate productions of the review, and each performance of Aida 2026 promises to sell out quickly.
The 2026 edition of Aida in Busseto revives the famous production by Franco Zeffirelli, adapted to the intimacy of the Giuseppe Verdi Theatre. On the podium, Giuseppe Mengoli leads a cast headed by Federica Vitali (Aida), Vincenzo Costanzo, and Teresa Iervolino. Four performances are scheduled between October 2 and 25, 2026, as part of the XXVI edition of the Verdi Festival between Parma and Busseto.
