The Bethlehem of the Sorrento Peninsula comes to life in the village of Fornacelle
In the hillside hamlet of Fornacelle, in Vico Equense, near Naples, Christmas takes the form of an entire village undergoing a transformation. The Fornacelle Living Nativity unfolds in the Torricella area, just a short distance from the village square, offering an outdoor path that recreates the Bethlehem of over two thousand years ago. Over the years, it has become one of the most anticipated Christmas events on the Sorrento Peninsula and one of the most attended sacred representations in Campania.
The trail winds through the alleys, stairways, and terraces of the village: there is no stage, as the village itself serves as the backdrop. Houses, dry-stone walls, and vegetable gardens become settings inhabited by actors in period costumes, while soft lights, scents, and Christmas carols accompany visitors along the way. Highlights include:
The strength of the Fornacelle Nativity lies in its numbers and its people: over 250 actors, entire families, young and old, working for months on costumes, sets, and rehearsals. The organization has been entrusted for years to the Parish of SS. Pietro e Paolo, with the support of the Municipality of Vico Equense and a committee of volunteers. Mayor Peppe Aiello noted how the nativity is built "with patience, sacrifice, and dedication" and represents the identity and sense of belonging of an entire community: more than just a performance, it is a portrait of a village telling its own story.
The 2025-2026 edition, the tenth, was inaugurated on December 26, 2025, in the presence of Bishop Francesco Alfano, the mayor, and civil and military authorities. Openings took place on December 26, 27, and 28, 2025, and then on January 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM; given the high turnout, the organizers added two extraordinary dates on January 10 and 11, 2026.
At the end of the trail, visitors can enjoy free tastings of freshly made Neapolitan zeppole, as well as stands featuring typical products and local handicrafts. It is the village's way of bidding farewell to those who have walked through the nativity: a taste of Campanian popular cuisine that completes the visit and supports the following year's organization through donations.
The organizers pay special attention to hospitality: three free car parks, a reserved area for motorcycles, and a bus park (by reservation). A shuttle service connects the Arola parking lot to the nativity entrance every fifteen minutes, while a dedicated shuttle departs from the Salesiani parking lot in Pacognano for groups arriving by bus. The route is declared accessible to people with disabilities, a feature that is far from taken for granted for a hillside nativity.
The Fornacelle Nativity is part of the Christmas program of the Municipality of Vico Equense, a town on the Sorrento coast known for its view of the Gulf of Naples, its pizza by the meter, and its hillside hinterland made of small hamlets. Visiting the nativity also means discovering a less touristy part of the Sorrento Peninsula, where the Neapolitan nativity tradition โ a cultural heritage of Campania โ is not a museum exhibit but a living practice, renewed every year by those who inhabit these alleys.
The Fornacelle Living Nativity celebrated its tenth edition in 2025-2026, confirming its status as one of the most popular Christmas representations on the Sorrento Peninsula. The village of Fornacelle, in the Torricella area of Vico Equense, opened to visitors from December 26, 2025, with the official inauguration in the presence of Bishop Francesco Alfano, Mayor Peppe Aiello, the organizing committee, and civil and military authorities.
Over 250 actors โ entire families, young and old from the village โ brought to life scenes of daily life inspired by the Nativity and traditional craft workshops, in an outdoor itinerary through alleys and terraces, accompanied by soft lights, scents, and Christmas carols. On January 6, the arrival of the Three Wise Men on horseback symbolically closed the route. At the exit, free tasting of Neapolitan zeppole and stands of typical products and handicrafts.
The high turnout recorded during the holidays prompted the Parish of SS. Pietro e Paolo and the volunteers to add two extraordinary evenings, January 10 and 11, 2026, to accommodate visitors who missed out during peak days.
