A festival designed for the little ones

The Fontechiari Fun Festival is one of the freshest highlights of the summer in Fontechiari, a village of just over a thousand residents in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. It is not a food festival or a concert series; it is a genuine three-day summer camp, conceived and built specifically for the children and teens of the village and the surrounding municipalities of the Comino Valley.

The initiative was launched by the Pro Loco Fontechiari APS, an association active since 1986 in promoting the local area, and is held with the support of the municipal administration. The core idea is simple: to offer local families a few days of structured, free, and high-quality entertainment during the summer break, when schools are closed and small inland towns in the Ciociaria region often struggle to provide organized activities for children.

Nature and the environment at the heart

The festival's guiding principle is clear from the slogan chosen by the organizers: "Protecting the environment is child's play." All activities revolve around environmental education, presented through the language of play rather than formal lessons. Participants spend their days with a team of activity leaders who offer:

• themed activities dedicated to nature, ecosystems, and respecting the local area;
• group games that are outdoor, cooperative, and non-competitive;
• creative workshops focusing on manual skills, reuse, and recycling;
• opportunities for socialization between children and teens of different ages.

The day-camp format allows participants to experience the village in a new way, rediscovering squares, green spaces, and corners of the historic center as shared playgrounds. For the Pro Loco, it is also a way to foster a sense of belonging to the village among the younger generations.

Fontechiari and the Comino Valley

Fontechiari is nestled in a particularly lush stretch of the Comino Valley, an area of the Ciociaria region that extends to the foot of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. The village, known for its springs and historic mills along the Melfa river, retains a compact layout with alleys, stairways, and small squares that become the natural stage for summer events during the warmer months. The environmental context makes the festival's theme anything but abstract: the nature discussed in the workshops is the very same nature the children have right on their doorstep.

Part of the Estate Fontechiarese

The Fontechiari Fun Festival is not an isolated event; it is one of the highlights of the Estate Fontechiarese program, a series of events that brings the town to life from July to August with live music, karaoke, card tournaments, patronal feasts—most notably those of the Madonna dei Fratelli and San Rocco—and gastronomic events like the "Night of Ancient Flavors." The program is promoted by the municipal administration together with the Pro Loco, festival committees, and local businesses, with most events offering free admission.

For families staying in the area during the summer, the festival is also an opportunity to integrate into village life: while children participate in the camp, parents can enjoy the evening program of concerts, social dinners, and festivities open to all.

Participation is by registration: the Pro Loco publishes an online form on its website to be filled out before the activities begin, allowing them to organize groups and the ratio of activity leaders. Spaces are limited, so it is advisable to act a few weeks in advance.
