Fontana Liri City Trophy — a day of youth cycling in the heart of the Ciociaria region
There is a moment, on the second Sunday of June, when Fontana Liri stops being just a quiet town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio, and becomes a true open-air velodrome. The town center streets — via Napoli, via Roma, and viale XXIX Maggio — are closed to traffic and turned into a technical circuit of about one kilometer, where dozens of children and teenagers challenge each other on their racing bikes. This is Fontana in Bici, which serves as the Fontana Liri City Trophy.
The competitive heart of the event is reserved for the Giovanissimi category of the Italian Cycling Federation (FCI), which gathers athletes aged 7 to 12 divided into six traditional heats. The most anticipated event is the premier G6 category, which tackles twelve laps of the city circuit: twelve rounds where handling technique counts as much as leg strength, as the track does not forgive trajectory errors.
Alongside the federal races, there is also room for the MPG and PG promotional categories, designed for younger children who are taking their first pedal strokes in a real race context but without the pressure. This is the choice that most defines the event: letting everyone, from beginners to the most experienced, experience the same thrill of the crowd cheering from the roadside.
Fontana in Bici was born from the close collaboration between the Municipality of Fontana Liri, the A.S.A.C.I. led by president Angelo Carinci and vice president Angelo Courrier, the Pro Loco APS Fontana Liri, and the ASD Fontana Liri APS. The organizational machine is made possible by a local committee of volunteers — including Marco Di Ruzza, Mattia Parravani, Luigi Lucchetti, Federico and Riccardo Mauti, Adriano and Aldo Proia — who manage the circuit, handle registrations, and welcome the cycling clubs arriving from across the province.
The formula works because it doesn't end with the sport. Throughout the afternoon, food stalls set up by volunteers remain open, welcoming athletes, families, and visitors: a simple and concrete way to keep visitors in town and showcase the local area. The official award ceremonies, with the presentation of trophies to the participating clubs, take place in Piazza Trento, the meeting point and symbolic heart of the day.
Launched in 2024, the event has already shifted gears: from the ecological walk open to the public and the gymkhana of the early years, it has evolved into a fully competitive city circuit with over a hundred young cyclists at the start. This growth is also certified by the presence of provincial leaders from the Frosinone Cycling Federation and the support of internationally renowned technical sponsors. For clubs in southern Lazio, Fontana in Bici is now a fixed date on the spring calendar.
On Sunday, June 14, 2026, Fontana Liri hosted the third edition of Fontana in Bici, serving as the Fontana Liri City Trophy for the Giovanissimi category. Participants gathered at 1:00 PM in Piazza Trento, with the Italian Cycling Federation competitive races starting at 3:00 PM.
The technical, all-city track challenged athletes along via Napoli, via Roma, and viale XXIX Maggio. The most followed event was the premier G6 category, consisting of twelve laps of the circuit. Alongside the six Giovanissimi heats, there were also promotional MPG and PG categories dedicated to younger children.
More than a hundred young cyclists were at the start, bringing numerous provincial clubs to the town and a large crowd along the entire race loop. The event was attended by the provincial president of the Frosinone Cycling Federation and vice president Sebastiano Retarvi. Among the technical sponsors was DMT, a brand known for supplying professional cycling champions.
The official award ceremonies took place at the end of the afternoon in Piazza Trento, with trophies presented to the participating clubs. Throughout the afternoon, food stalls managed by volunteers welcomed athletes, families, and visitors.
Fontana Liri is located in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. By car: A1 Rome-Naples motorway, exit at Ceprano or Frosinone, then take the expressway towards Sora and exit for Fontana Liri. By train: Isola del Liri or Sora station on the Roccasecca-Avezzano line, then local bus connection. Nearest airports: Rome Fiumicino and Rome Ciampino.
The meeting point for participants is in Piazza Trento; the race circuit covers via Napoli, via Roma, and viale XXIX Maggio, which are closed to traffic for the entire afternoon. We recommend parking outside the circuit ring and reaching the center on foot.
Watching the races is free. Registration for competitive events is reserved for FCI-registered members through their respective cycling clubs.
Bring a hat and water: the races take place in the early afternoon in June, and shade along the circuit is limited. Food stalls remain open until the award ceremonies.
