An evening of folk tradition in the heart of Formia

The Folklore Festival opens the month of August at the Arena Vitruvio, the open-air venue set up every summer in Piazza Aldo Moro, Formia's main square along Via Vitruvio, directly opposite the town hall. It is the event that kicks off the busiest part of the Formia summer: from August 1st onwards, the arena hosts concerts, theatrical performances, and comedy nights almost every evening, and the folklore event has the task of literally getting the dancing started.

The offering is that of a classic Italian folk festival: traditional songs, acoustic instruments, costumed dances, and that Mediterranean repertoire that, in lower Lazio, naturally intertwines with the nearby culture of Campania. The audience watches from the arena seating, but it is an engaged crowd that claps along and often ends up dancing—the hallmark of this type of evening, far removed from a silent concert.

Formia, the Gulf of Gaeta, and its summer

Formia is a seaside city in the province of Latina, in southern Lazio, overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta and nestled between the Aurunci Mountains and the coast. A city of Roman origin—the name of the arena recalls Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, the Roman architect and engineer traditionally linked to this territory—it preserves a remarkable archaeological heritage, from the Temple of Janus to the so-called Tomb of Cicero, and the Caposele archaeological area.

In summer, the city's population grows significantly, and the Municipality of Formia responds with a widespread program, which in recent years has taken the name Estate Formiana. The 2026 edition bears the subtitle Timeless Beauty and runs from July to September, involving not only the center but also the villages, peripheral districts, and the beaches of Vindicio and Gianola.

The festival within the Arena Vitruvio program

The Folklore Festival is not an isolated event: it is the opening night of a month that features some well-known names of Italian and particularly Neapolitan popular entertainment at the Arena Vitruvio. The August 2026 program announced by the municipal administration includes, among others:

• comedy shows by Nello Iorio, Simone Schettino, I Ditelo Voi, and Paolo Caiazzo;
• concerts by Peppe Barra, a historic voice of Neapolitan auteur song;
• musical evenings with Roberto Colella, Ambrogio Sparagna—one of the greatest interpreters of folk music in central Italy—Mr Hyde, Peppe Lanzetta and Friends, and Gianni Donati;
• the regional final of Miss Italia, hosted in the arena on August 21st;
• the White Nights - Street Artists Festival, which takes over Via Vitruvio on August 22nd.

Those arriving in Formia for the Folklore Festival will find much more than just a single evening: they will find the gateway to a program that fills the entire month.

What atmosphere to expect

The Arena Vitruvio has an intimate capacity, and the square remains lively even before and after the show: the bars and ice cream parlors of Via Vitruvio, the walk towards the small port of Caposele, and the seafront are just a few minutes' walk away. Evenings generally begin around 9:30 PM, when the heat has subsided and the gulf breeze makes it pleasant to stay outdoors until late.

It is an event also suitable for children, both for the accessible time and for the immediate language of traditional music and dance. For those visiting the Lazio coast in August, it represents a simple and free way to connect with city life, beyond the purely beach-focused circuit.

Why it's worth it

In a region where major events are often concentrated in Rome, the Formia Folklore Festival reminds us that southern Lazio has its own precise cultural identity, bordering between Lazio and Campania traditions. Free admission, open sky, traditional music, and a full square: few ingredients, but highly effective.
