The cultural and music festival in the pine woods of Barbiano, South Tyrol
The Föhrentanz Festival is one of the most original events of the South Tyrolean summer. It takes place in the Föhrenwald, the characteristic pine forest surrounding the sports area of Barbiano (Barbian), a small municipality in the Isarco Valley in the province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-South Tyrol region. Here, among the trees and art installations often crafted from reclaimed materials, a cultural festival comes to life for an entire weekend, blending music, theater, and art in an intimate and participatory atmosphere.
The festival is organized entirely by volunteers from the VirusClub VFG, a local association promoting the common good. Each edition involves over fifty volunteers and members who handle setup, hospitality, security, and programming. As president Anton van Gerven notes, the Föhrentanz «thrives thanks to its numerous volunteers»: it is this collective spirit, rather than commercial logic, that defines its identity. What began as a small gathering of friends has evolved over the years into a permanent fixture of South Tyrol's alternative cultural and festival landscape.
The program is intentionally multidisciplinary. The first evening is dedicated to theater, artistic performances, and live music in the woods, with free admission, while the second day focuses on electronic music, with DJ sets spread across two stages. There is no shortage of installations, workshops, market stalls, and information booths, alongside a curated culinary offering. The festival is designed for an adult audience: access is restricted to those over 18, with strict checks in place.
The Föhrentanz also stands out for its particular care regarding the safety and well-being of its participants. A dedicated awareness team collaborates with local prevention projects, adopting a conscious approach to nightlife that has helped solidify the festival's reputation among both the public and local institutions.
Immersed in the greenery of the Isarco Valley, between Bolzano and Bressanone, the Föhrentanz Festival offers an experience that goes beyond the concert: it is an invitation to experience the forest, art, and music in a different way, within the unique landscape of the municipality of Barbiano.
The 2026 edition of the Föhrentanz Festival, the eighth in its history, was held on June 19 and 20, 2026, in the pine woods of Barbiano, in the province of Bolzano. The chosen theme, «Devianz», guided a program centered on cultural diversity and the meeting of different artistic languages.
The evening of Friday, June 19, with free admission (from 7 PM to midnight), featured theater, artistic performances, and live music among the trees. New additions included the Rotating Theater with the show «Natur (ver)suchen» and concerts by the bands Spremuta, Sissamba, and Firri, accompanied by regional and international musicians. Saturday, June 20, reserved for those over 18, showcased electronic music across two stages. With over fifty volunteers at work, the festival confirmed its status as a widespread and participatory cultural event.
Barbiano is located in the Isarco Valley, in the province of Bolzano, along the Bolzano-Bressanone axis. By car, take the A22 Brenner motorway exit and follow the road to Barbiano; bus line 346 is also available. Organizers strongly recommend car-sharing and public transport, given the limited parking availability. From the center of Barbiano, you can reach the festival area on foot via the trails (about 30 minutes).
The evening of theater, art, and live music has free admission; the electronic music day is reserved for those over 18. Camping and pets are not allowed. For information: [email protected].
