Fóchi de San Giuanni

A night of fire at the gateway to the Ciociaria

The Fóchi de San Giuanni is the event that, every June, marks the symbolic start of summer in Paliano, a town in the province of Frosinone overlooking the Sacco Valley in southern Lazio. When the woodpiles are set ablaze along Via del Forte, the town gathers around the flames, and the evening turns into a long concert of folk music, with traditional singing, accordions, tambourines, and dances that draw in anyone eager to join the circle.

The solstice ritual: fire, water, and wildflowers

The feast of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on the night between June 23rd and 24th, has roots in solstice rituals that predate Christianity. In Paliano, as in many other towns in southern Lazio, the rite revolves around three symbolic elements:

• Fire, which purifies and wards off evil: young people would gather branches and brushwood to build the bonfires to be lit during the night;
• Water, left outdoors with herbs and petals to collect the dew, and used in the morning to wash one's face;
• Wildflowers, exchanged between friends to seal the bond of the compari de San Giuanni, a lifelong elective kinship.

These are simple gestures, passed down orally, which the Fóchi de San Giuanni bring back to life each year for participants without turning them into a museum exhibit: the festival remains vibrant because it is the community itself that keeps it alive.

HerniCantus, twenty-five years of research

The credit for this continuity goes to the HerniCantus association of Paliano, a group dedicated to ethnomusicological and choreutic research in the region. For about twenty-five years, they have been collecting repertoires, testimonies, and dance steps from the towns of the Ciociaria and bringing them back into circulation during the Fóchi. Every year, the Paliano-based group is joined by friends from southern Lazio—from the Bifolk of Veroli to the Officine Meridionali, from the Trillanti of Alatri to the MBL of Roccasecca—for a night of traditional oral music that is both a village festival and a study opportunity.

What to expect

The evening builds up gradually: it begins with the lighting of the bonfires at dusk, continues with concerts and rotating performances by various groups, and ends with dances—saltarelli, tarantelle, and Ciociarian ballarelle—that go on until late at night. The atmosphere is that of an authentic village festival, without massive stages or elaborate scenery: visitors will find an intergenerational crowd, stalls with local products, and the chance to learn a few dance steps on the spot.

Part of the Paliano Summer

The Fóchi de San Giuanni officially open the Paliano Summer calendar, the summer festival promoted by the municipal administration of Paliano together with local associations and committees. In the following weeks, the calendar continues with the Astronomy Festival, the Carosello Festival dedicated to street artists, the Latium World Folkloric Festival, the historical pageant with the Giostra del Turco, and the major musical events of Ferragosto.

Paliano beyond the festival

Those who choose to stay will find a medieval-style village dominated by the Castello Colonna, a compact historic center, and a landscape of vineyards and olive groves that produces the famous Cesanese, the premier red wine of Lazio. From Paliano, you can quickly reach Anagni, Fiuggi, and other centers of the Ciociaria: a convenient base for a weekend of tradition, good food, and hilly landscapes.
