A bonfire that tells the story of a village

The Focaraccio di San Giuseppe is one of the youngest yet most deeply felt festivals in lower Lazio. It is celebrated in Monte San Biagio, in the province of Latina, specifically in the hillside hamlet of Vallemarina, where Piazza Padre Biagio transforms for one night into a vibrant festival space around a massive woodpile destined for the flames. The Saint Joseph bonfire belongs to a tradition widespread throughout Southern and Central Italy: fire that burns away the remnants of winter and symbolically opens the new season, while the community gathers around the embers to share food, songs, and conversation.

The rebirth of a ritual

After years of silence, the Focaraccio was brought back to Vallemarina by the Next Gen association, a group of local youths who chose to restart from the territory's cultural roots. The formula is simple and clear: have fun together, leaving no one out. The initiative is sponsored by the Municipality of Monte San Biagio and, for the most recent edition, supported by the Lazio Regional Council, alongside the collaboration of local entities and Radio Show Italia 103.5. In just a few editions, the event has already become a fixture on the March calendar, attracting hundreds of people of all ages.

What to eat

The Focaraccio is also, and perhaps above all, a festival of taste. Food stalls open alongside the square, offering dishes from the humble Pontine cuisine—the kind truly prepared on festive evenings:

• Sausage and broccoli rabe sandwiches, a direct nod to local butchery, in a town famous for its sausage festival

Music, fire, and night

The program is built around a crescendo: it opens in the late afternoon with an aperimix and food stalls, continues with a fire performer show, culminates with the lighting of the Focaraccio, and closes with live music and a DJ set that keeps the square alive until nightfall. There are no barriers or tickets: admission is always free, and participation is the very essence of the festival.

Monte San Biagio and the Aurunci Mountains

Visitors arriving for the Focaraccio will find a village worth a longer stay. Monte San Biagio overlooks Lake Fondi and the Aurunci Mountains Natural Park, just a few kilometers from the beaches of Terracina and Sperlonga and the historic center of Fondi. The old town, dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle, preserves alleys, arches, and views over the Pontine plain. It is a territory known for the Monte San Biagio sausage, a local gastronomic specialty, and for the extra virgin olive oil from the groves covering the slopes. March, with its lengthening days and green hills, is one of the best times to discover it.
