The grand ritual bonfire in honor of Saint Anthony the Abbot in the heart of Grecìa Salentina
In the heart of Grecìa Salentina, in the province of Lecce, the small town of Soleto celebrates the Fòcara of Saint Anthony the Abbot every year, one of the most evocative fire rituals in the Salento winter tradition. The event takes place on January 17th, the day the Church commemorates Saint Anthony the Abbot, protector of animals and patron of fire. It revives a deep-seated custom: in past decades, bonfires were lit in various neighborhoods, and today the Pro Loco has gathered that memory into one great communal Fòcara.
The heart of the event is the construction and lighting of a massive bonfire made from branches gathered from olive tree pruning, a raw material that deeply links the festival to the agricultural landscape of Salento. At the moment of ignition, the Fòcara lights up under a sky illuminated by fireworks, in a collective anticipation that unites generations around the flames rising into the darkness of the winter evening.
A true village festival develops around the bonfire: the evening is enlivened by live music, featuring concerts by Salento bands, while food stalls allow visitors to savor local dishes and regional products. A small funfair is set up for children, making the Fòcara an event suitable for the whole family. The festival takes place in the Industrial Zone, near Via Martano, a spacious area capable of accommodating the crowds that gather every year for the lighting.
Soleto is one of the historic towns of Grecìa Salentina, the area of lower Salento where the ancient Griko language is preserved. The town is famous for the Spire of Raimondello Orsini, an elegant 14th-century bell tower that dominates the historic center. The Fòcara fits into this context of strong cultural identity as a deeply symbolic ritual, distinct from the town's patron saint feast, and represents an important moment of gathering for the entire community. The event is organized by the Pro Loco APS Soleto with the patronage of the Municipality of Soleto, in the province of Lecce, Puglia.
