About Flight of the Angel

Every last Sunday of August, in Gesualdo, Irpinia, a child dressed as an angel crosses the sky of Piazza Neviera, suspended by a steel cable stretched between the castle tower and the bell tower of the Church of the Most Holy Rosary. This is the Flight of the Angel, the heart of the Feast of Saint Vincent Ferrer: a theatrical dispute between good and evil, followed by a procession through the village streets and the evening rite of the Return to Heaven. A tradition documented since 1822 that draws faithful, curious onlookers, and returning emigrants to the town every summer.

An angel crossing the sky of Piazza Neviera

In the heart of Irpinia, the town of Gesualdo (Avellino province, Campania) preserves one of the most evocative sacred performances in Southern Italy. Every last Sunday of August, during the festivities in honor of Saint Vincent Ferrer, a child dressed as an angel is secured to a steel cable stretched between the Gesualdo Castle tower and the bell tower of the Church of the Most Holy Rosary. Guided by pulleys, the child glides to the center of Piazza Neviera, which is packed with faithful and curious spectators. The moment the small white figure detaches from the tower and remains suspended above the crowd marks the peak of the Irpinian summer.

A tradition documented since 1822

The first record of the festivities dates back to 1822, discovered in a commemorative manifesto from the 1922 centenary; the oldest explicit document preserved, however, dates to August 21, 1841. The town's collective memory also recalls the 1876 incident, when the hemp rope snapped and the child-angel fell into the vegetation around the castle, emerging unharmed. Following that scare, some Gesualdo emigrants working on an American merchant ship docked in Naples donated the steel cable that has supported the flight ever since.

How the performance unfolds

  • The Flight: The angel departs from the castle tower and descends, suspended over the square, accompanied by silence and then the applause of the crowd.
  • The Dispute: From a stage set up in the square, the figure of the devil appears, sparking a tense dialectical confrontation between good and evil, full of twists and turns.
  • The Victory and Procession: Once the devil is defeated, the angel completes the flight toward the bell tower; the saint's statue then emerges for a procession through the village streets.
  • The Return to Heaven: In the evening, the angel retraces the path in reverse, blessing the faithful, marking the end of the religious portion of the feast.

A celebration of community and homecoming

The Flight of the Angel is more than just a spectacle. It falls at the end of summer, when the harvest is complete, and is traditionally the appointment that calls back emigrants and Gesualdo families scattered across Italy and abroad: for many, it is the only date of the year when they are certain to return to the village. The child suspended over the square embodies the identity of a community that faces adverse forces on behalf of all, in a rite that seamlessly blends the sacred and the popular.

Bands, illuminations, and fireworks

Alongside the religious aspects—the seven-day preparation, rosary, solemn masses, and procession—there is an elaborate secular program: grand band concerts in Piazza Neviera and Piazza Umberto I, illuminations adorning the historic center's alleys, evening musical shows, and fireworks that illuminate the castle's silhouette late at night. In recent years, social initiatives like the "a volo" communal dinner and a parade through the town streets have been added.

Gesualdo, the village of the Prince of Musicians

The festival is rooted in a first-rate historical heritage. Gesualdo owes its fame to Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, one of the most daring madrigal composers of the late Renaissance, who made the castle his residence. The Palio of the Halberd, a re-enactment of the reconciliation between Carlo Gesualdo and his son Emanuele, was linked to the history of the princely family; however, this local folk tradition is not held regularly every year.

The 2026 edition

In 2026, the festival risked cancellation due to an organizational dispute between the Municipality and the parish. The issue was brought to an extraordinary municipal council meeting by Mayor Domenico Forgione and concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Municipality, the Parish, and the Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi-Conza-Nusco-Bisaccia: the angel will therefore return to fly over Piazza Neviera at the end of August. At the time of writing, the official date and detailed calendar have not yet been published: it is advisable to check for updates on the channels of the Pro Loco of Gesualdo and the Municipality.

Flight of the Angel — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Flight of the Angel will be held at the end of August in Gesualdo, as confirmed by the memorandum of understanding signed between the Municipality, the Parish, and the Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi after weeks of organizational uncertainty. The sacred performance will return to Piazza Neviera on the last Sunday of the month, along with the procession in honor of Saint Vincent Ferrer and the evening rite of the Return to Heaven. The official date and detailed program have not yet been published.

A last-minute confirmed festival

2026 has been a complicated year for Gesualdo's most anticipated festival. A dispute between the municipal administration and the parish regarding the management of the festivities had cast doubt on the very occurrence of the Flight of the Angel, to the point of requiring an extraordinary municipal council meeting convened by Mayor Domenico Forgione. The dispute was resolved with a memorandum of understanding signed between the Municipality, the Parish—led by Father Enzo Gaudio—and the Archdiocese of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi-Conza-Nusco-Bisaccia, with Archbishop Pasquale Cascio directly involved in the mediation.

What to expect

The agreement confirms that the angel will return to fly over Piazza Neviera on the last Sunday of August, following the established format: the flight from the castle tower, the dispute with the devil on stage, the procession with the statue of Saint Vincent Ferrer, and the evening rite of the Return to Heaven, accompanied by band concerts and fireworks at the castle.

Program not yet published

At the time of writing, neither the Municipality of Gesualdo nor the Pro Loco have released the official calendar for the 2026 edition with definitive dates and times. Updates will be published on the Pro Loco Gesualdo channels and the municipal notice board in the weeks leading up to the festival.

Tips

Piazza Neviera fills up well in advance: those who want to follow the dispute between the angel and the devil closely should arrive at least an hour early. The village is hilly and paved, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The evening ends late with fireworks at the castle: those arriving from afar might consider staying overnight in the village or neighboring towns, where there is no shortage of farmhouses and bed and breakfasts.
