The Fleming district reclaims its streets: games, music, workshops, and charity in Rome's Municipio XV
The Fleming Spring Festival is one of the most popular community events in North Rome. Promoted by Municipio XV of Rome Capital together with the association Il Filo del Quartiere, it takes place every May along the axis between Via Flaminia and Via Francesco Saverio Nitti, in the heart of the so-called Collina Fleming. For one morning, the streets are closed to vehicular traffic and returned to pedestrians: this, more than any single attraction, is the true meaning of the day.
Born just a few years ago as a spontaneous initiative by local committees and parents, the festival has grown rapidly to become a fixture in the Municipality's calendar. It is neither a food festival nor a music festival in the strict sense: it is a civic celebration where the program is built from the ground up, with every local entity contributing its own part.
The program is designed for all ages and concentrated in the morning hours, with activities spread along the street and within school grounds. Recurring features include:
A special role belongs to the Istituto Comprensivo Via Nitti, which opens its doors to the public on the same day for the Intercultural Festival: a journey created by students centered on the languages, cultures, and backgrounds present in their classrooms, with stalls, exhibitions, and meeting points in the school courtyard. The overlap of the two initiatives is not accidental: the neighborhood festival and the school festival have gradually merged, and today the Nitti courtyard is one of the main hubs of the day, also hosting the market.
The spirit of solidarity is part of the event's identity. The proceeds from the sale of items donated by merchants are destined for solidarity projects and the support of local foster homes: a choice that ties the festival to the network of associations and social services in Municipio XV. As municipal administrators emphasize, the goal is to create a positive synergy between residents, businesses, and schools, experiencing the neighborhood and public spaces in a new way.
Those expecting a grand, spectacular event will be surprised: the Fleming Spring Festival is, and wants to remain, a neighborhood celebration. It is an opportunity to see a residential district of Rome—often described only as a transit zone along the Flaminia—in its most communal dimension. For families with young children, it is an ideal morning: everything is free, everything is within walking distance, and everything is outdoors. And for those visiting Rome outside the historic center circuits, it is an authentic glimpse into the neighborhood life of the Capital, in the Lazio region.
Municipio XV is the largest in Rome Capital and includes a very diverse territory, from the residential neighborhoods of North Rome to agricultural areas and the Insugherata Nature Reserve. Fleming, which developed mainly starting in the 1960s on the hill overlooking Via Flaminia, is one of its densest and most recognizable hubs, with a strong neighborhood identity that this festival helps renew every year.
For the first time on a Saturday—previous editions were held on Sundays—the Fleming Spring Festival animated the stretch between Via Flaminia and Via Nitti for a morning, closed to vehicular traffic from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The fifth edition confirmed the well-tested formula: all activities were free, built together by associations, neighborhood committees, local schools, merchants, the parish, and individual volunteers.
The President of Municipio XV, Daniele Torquati, spoke of "an event that has grown in recent years in terms of entertainment offered, quality, and attendance," while the Councilor for School and Culture, Tatiana Marchisio, emphasized how the festival is "an opportunity to experience the neighborhood and public spaces differently, creating a positive synergy between residents, businesses, and schools."
Games and sports activities proposed by local entities, music, and creative workshops for children alternated along the street. The Istituto Comprensivo Via Nitti opened its doors to showcase its Intercultural Festival, while the flea and craft market offered a space dedicated to creativity, reuse, and recycling, with items made by local citizens and artisans. As per tradition, a vintage car parade accompanied the event.
The charity raffle was also confirmed: the proceeds from the sale of items donated by Fleming businesses were allocated to solidarity projects and support for local foster homes.
Via Flaminia and Via Nitti closed to vehicular traffic. Free admission to all activities.
The event takes place along Via Flaminia and Via Francesco Saverio Nitti, in the Fleming district (Municipio XV, Rome, ZIP 00191), on a morning in late May, roughly from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
Admission and all activities are free. Only purchases at the market and charity raffle tickets are paid, with proceeds donated to charity.
The festival is concentrated in the mid-morning hours: it is best to arrive early for the vintage car parade, which traditionally opens the day. The event is stroller-friendly and suitable for families with young children.
